opinions on an opinion about cracked balls
« on: October 08, 2011, 05:36:01 AM »
Just wanting to see what some opinions on this topicare. a buddy of mine has had 3 balls crack on him (all being storm brand). he leaves them in his detached garage with limited heatingcooling during st louis winters/summers. he asked what could be problem. i said 1 cracking isnt all bad but 3 is a problem. now i think storm is a reputable company and probably doesn't have a problem with construction and durability. so i told him the extreme temps they were subjected to was the culprit. he asked the proshop operator (a 1 time winner on pba a few years ago) and he said that if balls arent used much they may crack and the oil conditions the ball and keeps it "fresh" basically. at first i thought it might be correct since lane oil is called conditioner. but then i was thinking i still use balls atleast 8 years old and i bowl sparingly here and there. so everyone what do you think. oh and by the way all of the balls that cracked were less than 3 years old and were bowled with enough not to be "conditioned" in my opinion.

if you have to adjust the surface, you either bought the wrong ball or you can't adjust

Bowling balls handle heat pretty well, but cold is not their friend. The vast majority of cracked balls that we see are when the customer leaves them in his car over night during the winter.
Having said that, there are other things that can contribute to cracking, such as not using them for extended periods of time. I had a couple crack while on a shelf at room temps because I was "saving" them for future use. When we use them the cover stays more pliable and able to handle the abuse we put them through.

The use thing makes sense to me also. Only one of the balls that I have had crack was not being stored and the others had been for several months at least. They all were setting either in my closet or another room inside my house. All in a temperature controlled enviroment. When I first started seeing this in a pro shop they seemed to be all guys that left there balls in the car all the time, so had figured it was that temperature extreme the balls were seeing. We have a lot here in Texas bust in the summer since the inside of the car will get so hot. The cover has to expand and contract as temperature changes, that is just a rule of nature. The walls of your home or the building you work in can expand and contract several inches on a day with an extreme temp swing, so the ball coverstock will as well. IF that was the only cause then balls setting in your bag or a box in your den should never crack, but just isnt't the case. My old orange Pirahna that I bought new too many years ago and would pull out for dry lanes occasionally suddenly cracked last year. That's not an aggresive coverstock, so that reason would not hold, it was in the house, so not temp..Just dried out and cracked maybe. All ball companies have this happen. Its not a 900 thing  or a Storm thing or etc. Reactive resin will bust for multiple or no reason and I doubt even the ball experts can really explain it or they could find an additive to stop the problem.

Yes, it happens but i think the frequency is getting ridiculous. I've seen more cracked balls, the last two seasons, than i've seen.... ever! Outside causes or owner abuse aside.... there's something in the manufacturing that isn't right and the companies need to step up and solve the problem. They don't know how or can't figure it out? Bs! Lol! :-)
