I am able to get a cleaner release with an oval slug.

With a round slug, the ball tends to slip off of my thumb much more often.

On edit - also, it justs feels better!

If you are talking about preformed oval thumb slugs they always made me hang in the thumb too long.

The premade ovals as said are sticky. also seeing a good proshop and ask them to check your fit. they can help decide if you need an oval or round thumb.
