Palmers
« on: September 11, 2003, 12:53:18 AM »
I joined new league for first time last week on Monday. I bowled well for first league 185-223-181(I guess I should have bagged a bit, might be hard for me to keep that up)
Here is my question?

I saw several guys using the "only two finger" method and palming the ball. A couple of the guys were actually good. One guy that bowled against us bowled 230-218-202 with two fingers.

Is this becoming more and more popular or what?

Do you guys honestly believe that the no thumb release isn't getting more popular?

It seems every new batch of juniors or leagues there are 2 or 3 more no thumbers.

No thumb is the wave of the future. The thumb only holds the ball, and gives you problems..!! =:^D

NNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

For every no thumb bowler that averages 200 there are probably 500 that use the thumb that do.  Many juniors try this because in their minds big hook ='s kewlness factor, nevermind that most can't spare or score.  Take the outside of the lane away and they are toast.  There are a few that can actually pull it off but very few.  Next time watch them and see if they are smooth and consistent, most are not and average 150 or less.

Every person that I know who has switched to "no thumb", their average has INCREASED..!! The best bowler in the city is a no thumber, and averages in the 230's. =:^D

Certainly there are some that will excel with the no-thumb technique, just as there are some 200+ two-handed bowlers.

My experience from seeing a lot of these go by... they hit the pocket a ton and get a lot of strikes on house shots.  However, many of them seem to miss a lot of spares, and have a lot of trouble on the tournament shots.

As I said, there will always be those that can bowl PBA numbers even throwing a backup ball, or between the legs.  But I think that in the long run, cool points don't pick up your average much.
