PAP Migration Questions
« on: July 02, 2003, 06:09:22 PM »
I have this nagging question. I have a pretty low track right now PAP 4-5/8 over and 0 up. I used to be closer to 5-1/8 to 5-3/8 over. I used to have a problem thumping my thumb hole if I released the ball wrong so I started working on lowering my track a little. Now I no longer have that problem. But with all my stuff drilled for my low track, if I need to come up through the ball to get into a roll earlier and raise my track, this would effectively move my PAP to the right 3/4 of an inch.

So my question is. If you have to drill a ball and could raise and lower your track at will, which PAP position would you use to base your drill pattern off of? To me, if I raise my track I am trying to get it to roll earlier because of the presence of oil. But if I raise my track then my drill on the ball will also shift, correct? To me this kind of defeats the purpose of the drill.

Example. My Silver Streak Particle is drilled 4x3. If I raise my track to get it to roll earlier when the carry down starts, in theory, my drill pattern will become closer to a 5x4 which would make the ball want go longer and hook sharper. So wouldn't it be better to drill off of your farthest PAP measurement and drill it stronger from there? The lower track is going to get more length naturally from the release so it wouldn't be effected as much by the shift, to me.

Now it will depend on if it is a pearl, solid, reactive or particle, but the theory is the same. What do you think.

Thanks,
Kalannar

hmmm...kind of a tough one.  But if your lower track release is your typical one I would drill for that release.  I'm a high tracker and drill for my main release even when I tilt the ball more.

The other reason you wouldn't want to drill for the higher PAP (taking some info from your example) is that a 4x3 would become something like a 2x1 or so when you lowered your track.

So would it be better to shoot for the happy medium. Since there is roughly one inch difference between the 2. Should I shoot for a PAP of 5" then? A layout of 4x3 on a 5" PAP would then be a 3-1/2x2-1/2 on the low track and 4-1/2x3-1/2 on the high track. This would minimize the amount that the release would effect it.

The reason that I am asking this is because of my bowling this week. I started off throwing to hard the first game but my SS Pearl was reacting pretty good. I tried slowing down but everyone on our lanes was throwing the same general line so the carry down happened pretty quick. I switched to my SS Particle and slowed down my ball speed. Left three washouts and and many 1-2-8's. This was after moving a total of 8 boards right after the first one. I tried raising my track to get a little more roll and the ball just seemed to skate even more. I even tried to get into some fresh oil in the middle of the lane and that didn't work either. The last 2 games I had one strike and that was in the first ball of the tenth with the SS Pearl down 5 board and the ball stuck to my thumb and went right into the pocket. I tried the same thing the very next ball with a clean release and left a 7 pin.

Hope this helps to understand why I am asking this questions.

Plus40.

"When you think about it, does it really matter what the pin distance measurement on the ball you are using actually is? Whether it is 4" or 5" really isn't important. The important thing is that it is not rolling soon enough with either of your releases which means that the pin needs to be further from the track and closer to the PAP. "

This is what I am trying to find out. If the ball is drilled for my "A" game which is a low track with PAP 4-5/8" and the ball is drilled 4x3, then if I go to my "B" game which is Higher track with PAP 5-3/8 over. the effective drill will be 5x4. This will make the ball react weaker which is counter productive of switching releases to get the ball rolling earlier. Since I have a problem throwing my stuff through my break point as it is with my speed, I was thinking of drilling my stuff for my a game on the low side of 3-3/8 so if I have to throw with a higher track it would push the pin over to the high side of 3-3/8.

Example, ball drilled for "A" game at 3x3 would become 4x4 when I switch to "B" game. This would help on keeping the ball from breaking to late normally and still have enough flare potential to help in the heavier oil that I need the Higher track for.

Opinions???

Plus 40 & King of the mill,
I understand your points.

Kotm, the surfaces I have right now are what has worked so far. Tuesday night was the first problem that I have had with either of these two. THe V2 needs to be plugged due to new pitches. I guess the carry down was a lot worse than usual.

Plus40, Axis rotation has been a problem that I have had. I think the  Axis rotation I have listed in my profile is off. I need to reevaluate it. Also my axis tilt. I am not sure but right now I think my axis rotation would be closer to 15° and axis tilt probably closer to 35°. It used to be like my profile a few years ago but I have not checked for specifics lately.

Thank you both for your input. It was very helpful. I know what I need to work on now. Stupid Cobra 3.

I don't know if you read my other post but I am thinking of switching to left handed and starting over. We'll have to see.
