Playing straighter
« on: December 13, 2006, 12:39:32 PM »
Any tips on playing strighter, cutting the revs and speed and becoming more accurate is what im trying to accomplish. Should I change whare im standing on the approch closer to the foul line ? Hand position ? Im only bowling on the house shot, but i want to use this as a second game for tornaments. I have a somkin infeno drilled 5 x 4 to go long for this release. Would that even be the ball to use ???? Any help is appricated thanks !

Ease up on your follow through so you won't tend to rev it quite as hard.  I try to lift a little less with my fingers on the release when I need to go straighter.  Just let the ball flow off your hand and you should be able to decrease the overall hook.  I've also had success going straighter by coming up the back of the ball more, i.e. less axis rotation, although that doesn't work for everyone.

All in all, it depends on whether you want less revs or less axis rotation, or both.

To play straighter, your hand needs to come up the back of the ball and not go around the ball during your release.  You need to have more of an end over end roll and not much axis tilt.

Most of the time, your ball speed will need to be higher than average so the ball won't roll out before it hits the pins.

do you have access to taped pba shows ?  if so, watch walter ray williams, jr., and norm duke when they are going straight from the outside line. these are the best two players in the world at this shot. they have several things in common: lower rev rate, higher ball speed, end over end roll( 20-30 degrees axis rotation ). accuracy and speed control are extrememly important. the oil pattern will dictate whether you can play this type of shot.
