Poll: Best dry lane ball (past or present)
« on: July 24, 2005, 09:55:59 AM »
For any definition of dry, like hooking heads or Sahara desert. Three come to mind:
Ebonite Optix Spider (when I was a full roller)
RotoGrip Sonic X pearl (found one on the rack )
Brunswick Monster SlayR (with a LOT of polish, currently using)

Ready set GO!

This post lets me know that the majority of the people who posted in it have no idea of what "dry" is.  Alot of these balls you've named I've seen people come out on fresh east-coast house shot oil and in collegiate tournaments and kill patterns with ease.

I've bowled Tier 1 Collegiate tournaments in the past where the shot was so short/dry from the start that plastic balls were going brooklyn from all angles if you didn't keep your speed up.

I will agree that if you have no idea how to kill revs off of the ball and change your hand position(my normal solution to very dry lanes), then nothing beats plastic, or an older softer plastic.

No, resin balls will not clear the heads when the heads are dry enough to be hooking. Plastic is the only cure (UNLESS your ball speed at the pin deck, not the arrows, is 20 mph or greater).

right as usual Charlest... used an old ebonite magnum 8, heavily polished on a really dry lane, after my pantera hooked into the left gutter (was playing right hand) after travelling about 35 feet... shot an 210 average for 4 games.. for those not in the know.. there is no help from the core on this ball.. so 210 is pretty respectable..

I agree with DP3 here...many of the suggestions here are bordering on just plain silly. One needs to learn a hand position change as well as potential equipment change to be truly successful on toast.

I am a Proud FOS member but there is a reason why I have had 3 XXXL's...the ball is too strong for true dry lanes. Granted pin over the fingers and cg under with loads of top and finger weight will surely help it's still pretty strong.

I stand behind my initial choice of the grey angle. I have 2 used 16's sitting here and was lucky enough to find a once drilled 15 sitting on a rack at a local alley. If you happen to find one, get it for your dry ball....you won;t be disappointed.

... there's a such thing as dry nowadays? With a lot of our centers putting out 22+ ml of oil out the lane nowadays (at least in the United States), I'm surprised we're having this conversation.

Brunswick Black Beauty, or AMF Classic Pro-Roll (a.k.a. "The 3-Dot").

These were great dry lane balls 30 years ago as well.
