Poll: Grip aids in the thumbhole
« on: December 31, 2005, 10:03:49 AM »
What is everyone using for grip aids in the thumbhole?

ie such as Front = Cork Inserts, Exotic tapes, or bowler's tape, etc.  In the back = Magic Carpet, Foam, slick tape, cloth tape etc. Please include any creative homemade hobbiest or ye ole hardware store ideas too.

and what if any are the pros and cons that you experience with your methods and products? such as when it's very warm or very cold.

I am currently using 4-5 pieces Brunswick Bowler's 3/4" coarse white tape in the front and J&J Cloth tape in the back. But am thinking about going with more grip such as Cork a cork insert or a Vise grip product in the front. Sometimes, I feel that I don't have complete control when releasing ball with heat and cold extremes, and feel that more solid gripping texture might help.

thanks in advance.

I do the same as JP. slight differences during seasons.
Summer time: 0 to 1 1" white tape up front.
Winter time: 1 to 2 tape(s)

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>Front - One piece 1" white tape. Back - Magic Carpet. Thumb hole oversized by 1/32" to accommodate these. -- JohnP  <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>

I tried that and for what ever reason, it just doesn't work for me.<img src=../Forum/icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

In my one thumbhole (Thank you, Vise!), I go with 4 to 5 pieces of white tape in the back. There used to be this awesome Brunswick silver tape that I liked, but I can't seem to find it anymore... but I don't think I would go back.

Lately I have been using thumb sox. I start with one, and add a second if my thumb shrinks. Works fine. Faster than tape.

I was taught by a top ball driller to tape the hole where the side of my thumb lays. I now put one piece of Valentino's Franken tape on the side at the front of the hole and 1-3 pieces of Brunswick 3/4 inch black bowlers tape on the side towards the back of the hole. I find you squeeze very little doing this and have a firm feeling.

Just want to clarify: Are you a right handed bowler? if so, would the tape on the side at the front be on the left side of the thumbhole and vice-versa?

I read somewhere that you should tape the front and back of the hole, not the sides.

Buckwild,

It would be on the sides of your thumb as it lays is the hole. So yes, the front would be on the left side and the back would be on the right side of the hole. Let me know if you need more info because this works!

ccrider,

I would like to know where that info came from because in bowling nothing is 100% right. It's about feel and what feels right to you. The guy that taught me this was a superb bowler long before the ball made the bowler. Try what I've said and see that it does work. It doesn't change pitch like taping the ball on the underside of you thumb does. It just firms up the grip so you don't squeeze. And in most cases you only have to tape the back side of the hole and it becomes very comfortable. I use Franken tape on the front side of my thumb to get a quick consistant release.

Thinking about giving this a try, but before I do, could you please post a pic showing where the tape is inserted? I want to get it right when I try it. Thanks

Usually 1-2 pieces of white tape in the thumbhole during the cold weather months, 0-1 during the summer months.  Sometimes if the thumb just needs to be tweaked a tiny bit, I'll use the black tape instead.

I use 1 - 4 pieces of white tape (depending on me and the weather) in the front of the thumb hole, nothing in the back. I use Turbo's Skin Protection and Fitting tape on the back of my thumb.

I've tried
- Thumbillow
- Magic Carpet
- SlickTape.

I liked Magic Carpet the best even though it required the largest change to my thumb hole. But it irritated the skin on the back of my thumb too much.

I used to use a piece of gator tape in the front.  My ball driller made a mold for me and incorporated the gator tape in the front.  Nice feel and every ball is exactly the
same.

I  use grip loc thumbs so I only have to prep one thumb hole as i can take it ball to ball .

I have Magic Carpet in the back side of the hole and a Rowl Rite strip in front of my thumb
http://www.bowl4fun.com/magiccarpet/magiccarpet.htm
I used to be magic carpet and white tape but now i just move the rowl Rite strip up or down as needed to get the feel for the day             www.rowlriteinc.com
