Poll: Grip aids in the thumbhole
« on: December 31, 2005, 10:03:49 AM »
What is everyone using for grip aids in the thumbhole?

ie such as Front = Cork Inserts, Exotic tapes, or bowler's tape, etc.  In the back = Magic Carpet, Foam, slick tape, cloth tape etc. Please include any creative homemade hobbiest or ye ole hardware store ideas too.

and what if any are the pros and cons that you experience with your methods and products? such as when it's very warm or very cold.

I am currently using 4-5 pieces Brunswick Bowler's 3/4" coarse white tape in the front and J&J Cloth tape in the back. But am thinking about going with more grip such as Cork a cork insert or a Vise grip product in the front. Sometimes, I feel that I don't have complete control when releasing ball with heat and cold extremes, and feel that more solid gripping texture might help.

thanks in advance.

White 1/4" insert tape on the thumbpad side of thumbhole since I'm in Michigan, it's cold, and my thumb shrinks in cold weather

Front 3/4" white tape

Back 3/4" white tape with a piece of Slick Tape ( from http://slicktape.com/ )trimmed to 3/4" and put it over the white tape.

Brick,

Thanks for reminding me about the slicktape.  I use the all purpose cloth tape in the back. How slick is the slicktape. If it would aid in a faster release it might just be nice to have when warmness and wetness starts to build up.

I noticed on the slicktape web page that "Slicktape was designed for sliding and is temperature resistant to 200 degrees F" which could help in a warmer bowling environment.  Are the pieces of tape standard 1" size? They look to be from the picture.

Front - One piece 1" white tape.  Back - Magic Carpet.  Thumb hole oversized by 1/32" to accommodate these.  --  JohnP

I tried that and for what ever reason, it just doesn't work for me.

Brickguy221 -- What about the combination didn't work?  Of course, no two bowlers are alike, so what works for me may not work for you.  For example, I like 1/2 reverse in my thumb hole while it seems like everyone else is trying to go to forward pitch.  But I've had a lot of success with my customers that have release problems using this combination.  --  JohnP

JohnP, even though it wasn't too tight nor too loose, I didn't like the feel of it and for what ever reason couldn't come out of the ball right with it. I am a bit of a squeezer even when it is not nessary to squeeze, I still squeeze. Probably from 35-40 years of memory built into my head. Have never been able to "kick the habit" regardless of ball fit, pitches, etc. However I do now have it down to a very light squeeze and maybe what I now do is fairly normal, I don't know. I do know that the knuckle of my thumb no longer gets sore or red or callus, like it once did.

OK.  If something doesn't feel right, best thing is to try something else, as you did.  --  JohnP

None in the front. Teflon tape in the back. This allows me to use a tight thumbhole. I combine this with thin strips of zinc tape on my thumb where the sides of my thumb press on the ball. Seems to work for me.
I went to a Storm rolling thunder day last year and tape in the thumbhole came up in the discussion.
I was very supprised to hear that a lot of top bowlers use anything up to 12-15 pieces of tape in their thumbholes. I would have thought that to be very uncomfortable. I can only tell you what I was told but it does seem excessive.

Loved the Magic Carpet, but even with correct fit, roughed
back of thumb too much.

Maybe in combination with protective thumb tape?

1" and 3/4" white tape on the back of thumb hole and nothing on the front.  The 3/4" piece works when you are in between tape...  Easy and simple.  I normally have anywhere from 1-4 pieces of tape in the back of my thumb hole.

I prefer a rougher feel to my thumb hole, if any tape is needed I use 1 inch white either in the front, back or both.  Through normal use my thumb slug will get too smooth and I hang up, then I rough it up slightly with some 60 grit sand paper.  Pretty sure when it is too smooth I grip it more, the rough texture ensures I do not grip as hard.  If that makes any sense.
