Price for Drilling up Blank Ball?
« on: April 30, 2007, 12:17:19 AM »
What do you guys typically see for costs when you bring a blank ball in to get punched up?  Do not include grips/slug if you use them, assume that you bring those in also.

I buy my balls, grips, and slugs online and then bring them to a local guy to drill.  We are good friends and he has in the past usually cut me a really good deal (like $10/ball), but lately I can tell that something is different and I sense he wants more than what was charged before.

Another local shop charges $40 for the same service...but I've never paid anywhere near that...most I think has been like $25-$30/ball at pro shops where I use to live.

And also...this "friend" does not own the pro shop...but rather has access to it and does work in it freelance.  I have another friend who will drill them up for free just to do it (he's been doing it for years though), but I don't trust his skills as good as the first guy.

Thoughts?

My diller greatly helped me out when i brought three in at one time.  It's ussually $50 plus slugs/inserts, and I do get them from there.  He charged me a total of $50, so I threw him a $40 tip.  To get three balls all punched with slugs and inserts for $90 is still a great deal.

Depends on the shop here.

Two shops I know of are $30 drill, $15 grips and slug.  The shop I go to is a bit more expensive, but the price jump is worth it - $60 for the whole package.  Luckily, he's gotten to know me lately, and charges me his in-shop drilling cost ($45).  Unfortunately, he's not really worth going to if you want to buy the ball in-shop, as his ball prices do not include drilling.  Add in his $45 drilling fee, and you're looking at $250+ a ball.

We can't go more than about a week without someone inquiring about the cost of drilling in our area.

The local shop charges $35 for a blank drill, $27.50 for inserts/thumb.  $35 is fine, he does pretty good work.

The shop I go to that's two hours away charges $30 ($30 over his cost if you buy from him or $30 if you don't), plus $15 for inserts/thumb.

In our shop, any high-end ball is $40 plus grips ($8) and slug ($10).  Mid-line balls are $30 plus G&S.... entry and plastic are $20 plus G&S

I think "I_Cant_Bowl" hit the nail on the head here.  I don't feel like I'm taking advantage of him, but do feel like its worth more to me than what I'm paying him.

For those who asked...this is a pro shop, but is vacant right now without a pro leasing space.  My friend has permission and access to it including all the equipment by the center owner who technically owns it.  The center owner lets them do what they want basically.

Either way...after reading the prices in these threads and the other threads...even $20/ball for a blank is a great deal.  I'll be sure to "tip" him better in the future...especially since he does advanced layouts for me.

What I think is funny that Shops charge $10 and $15.00 for Grips and slugs. They cost shop under $1.00 each. We charge $40.00 including Grips.

Grips maybe, but not slugs.

Who cares what they cost, there is labor involved with installing them. They are not the same as selling a bag of Rosin.

When it comes to slugs, there are 5 steps.

Drill hole with appropriate bit.
Drill hold again with bit matching thumb slug (1 1/8, 1 1/4, etc)
Hammer in thumb slug
Measure back and re drill through thumb slug with the correct bit.
Cut the remaining slug off.

You can eliminate the first step by just lining up the thumbhole cut line with the thumb bit, then switching out to your slug OD bit without taking the ball out of the jig.
