Pro speed
« on: November 02, 2003, 06:24:35 AM »
first off, i think there should be a forum for PBA tour talk.  just a thought.

More importantly, how fast do the pros throw?  there is rarely a cats system on the telecast to give speed and revs.  Today it looked like Lonnie was throwing around 14 mph.  It looked really slow.  Scroggins looked like he was throwing no more than 17 mph and 10 revs.  and couch looked like he was throwing 20+, but he always looks like that.

Does anyone know how fast most of the pros throw?  WRW?  PB3? PDW?  I've seen such varied info on telecasts. People say PDW throws so fast because of the big backswing, but the last time i saw him clocked it was only around 18 mph, which seems on the low end for the pros.  Healey seems like a slower throwing Pro, but last time i saw him clocked it was around 18.5-19.  Duke is generally a slower throwing guy with incredible accuracy.

I just want this kind of info when watching a telecast.  It gives something to pay attention to when the telecast is INCREDIBLY BORING, like today.  Must have been one of the most boring shows I've tuned in to in a while.  Thank god couch was on it, otherwise it would have been 100% football time.

And lastly, i really don't understand how it is even physically possible for Smith to throw the fireballs he does.  If i hit 22 mph on the gun, it looks like there is not enough time to even make the turn, regardless of how many revs i put on it.  i don't see how anyone can do what he does.  but that is old news.

I normally time them from their release to when the ball hits the pins with a stop watch. That normally tells me their ball speed. I do that to see if their speed changes from frame to frame, not so much as the speed the pros use. That'll depend on the oil pattern. Like the recent PBA, they're using pattern B. That's 45 ft.

I think the average for PBA pros is around 18.5 or 19.  Lonnie probably throws about 17, or at least today anyway.  Wilson was probably about 19, Jeff Smith was about the same, Jason was about 20, and Scroggins was about 18.  Not completely sure, more of a guess, but it's close anyway.

I'm BETTER than you because . .

1) I've met the DNL leprechaun
2) I get paid to watch tv.
3) My dad's friend's brother knows Chris Barnes' stepdad.
4) Kristi's my buuuuuddy
5) I get to witness a man with the speed and revs of Robert Smith combined with the accuracy of the guards in the lobby scene of the Matrix average 240
6) I can throw a better fit over nothing than you can.

when abc-tv still showed the pro bowlers tour they tracked the average touring pros ball speed to be about 19mph. most of the best players on tour can vary their ball speed as needed anywhere from 16mph to 21mph.
