Question about someone smoking pot during league play?
« on: March 05, 2009, 10:39:09 AM »
So last night i was subbing on my girlfriends team for a teammate who is injured. Two of the guys we were bowling against went outside for a "cigarette break" between the second and third game. They came back absolutely reeking of pot smoke. When we questioned them about it they kinda gave us a "whats the big deal about smoking some weed" comments. What i'm wondering is there a USBC rule pertaining to this and can they get in trouble for it?

Bowling is a back alley, dirty, hustler game. At least it used to be. When it was cool and popular. Then along came the sterilized, smoke-free, fun-free, bowling "centers" full of power nerds   b!tching about some kid that "smells" like weed. Give me a break... and give me a bowling "alley."

Back alley, dirty, hustler game? LOL

It's bowling. Not a cock fight. Times change. I agree that people should quit their whining, but everybody has their rights, so buck up.

Bottom line, if you're doing something illegal, go to whatever end you need to to cover it up. You'll be OK if you do.

If you do it and people find out, and you end up in trouble for it, you have no one to blame but yourself for being sloppy.

If you do it and people find out, and then you want to act like they're the ones with the problem and not you, you'll find out that it just steels their resolve to make sure you don't do it. And trying to intimidate them/harass them into letting you alone typically just makes the situation worse.

...and the thing is lost in the 21st century is respect for the fellow man.  That's the saddest thing of all..

If a center is NO SMOKING, then don't smoke, except in designated smoking areas.  If weed is illegal (it is in most places, right?), smoke all you want at home - just keep it there...

Bowling alleys have finally fallen as a last bastian of men.  I don't smoke weed so I don't need to buck up.  It's the lack of "bucking up" that's the problem.

LOL!!!!! Bowling alleys have finally fallen as the last bastion of men????
The bowling houses I've frequented over the last thirty years have been dominated by mixed, senior, junior leagues, and open bowling with, usually, ONE men-exclusive league. Some bastion of men. Come out of your cave...there is a real world out here.

Pot is a gate...no no I don't believe that. We have quite a few blaze up during league. Big deal, if you don't like the smell don't stand near them. Pot smell doesn't stink any worse than cigarettes. Why should you question them about what they were doing outside? Thats really none of your business as long as they were back in time for their turn.

If you guys want pot to be legal, that's fine. Alcohol was illegal for many years but is illegal no longer, and laws change.

But the notion that laws should just be overlooked -- and that the person with the "real problem" is the one asking, or even demanding that the law be followed -- is a bunch of BS.

If you do something illegal in public, you have no right to get upset about it if you get caught or in trouble. If it's that important, do it at home or where no one can see you. If you get caught, you have only yourself to blame.

I'm guessing that the USBC frowns upon smoking pot or doing any other
illegal drugs during league play, but I didn't "officially" check
the handbook.

I'm just wondering why you didn't report them if it bothered you???  No
matter how many people do it or feel it should be legalized, it isn't legal.
(yet)

However, you should take that up w/ the center and let them know that illegal
drugs are being used on their premises and I'm almost sure they'll address it.

Did you see them smoking pot?  Did you see them with pot? Did you see them breaking any laws? If not, then leave them alone, unless you are an on duty cop. I'm not saying to over look laws but unless your a cop it ain't your problem. Unless you're going to call the police cause you think someone was smoking pot. If you're going to do that make sure you call the police next time someone makes a illegal lane change.

I wasn't the guy who witnessed this, but yeah, if someone lights up in my home bowling center I'm probably going to say something to management. To say cops are the only ones who should help enforce laws is laughable. Following that logic to its ultimate end, if I were to witness someone trespassing on my neighbor's property, I'd have to hope a cop happened to drive by and see it, too.

As far as calling in illegal lane changes, if I want to, I will, and if I don't, I won't. Point being, it's my call, not theirs.

you should prefer them to smoke pot over drinking, the buzz is usually gone within an hour and they are less likely to run over your child who is playing in the street. seriously, are some of you really so uptight you would narc on them? geezers

Has nothing to do with being uptight. Why is that the argument from people who want to break a law and be left alone to do it?

If you want to smoke pot, change the law. It's very simple. You get enough people on your side and you vote to change it. Then we all have to accept the outcome whether we personally like it or not. Until then, though, oh well...

Nothing wrong with a couple of reefers....as long as you're not blatantly shoving it into someone's face!

Sorry, but smelling like weed is no worse than smelling like cigarette smoke or like you work at a brewery!

I'm an avid pot smoker and a serious bowler. I wont be there to occupy your space or time. I'll be there to take your money. Just because someone smokes pot does not mean they can't live a productive life or be of use to society. Use your head before you post, please.

You may be a good bowler, and if you are, you are doing a disservice to your game, as you would likely be better if you didn't feed your head THC (smoking weed is not advantageous when it comes to performance, whether it be sports, education, work, driving, etc., although it makes one a better at eating and giggling).

As for taking my money in bowling, well, good luck with that.

wow...didnt realize i was gonna spark up such a debate. Heres the thing, i really dont care if they smoke pot or not, but i could tell they were outside smoking some real skunky stuff. The smell actually made me queasy, along with everybody else on our team and theirs. Not to mention it was a family league so there were alot of younger kids around too. And yes, i actually saw them smoking it since our pair of lanes was right across the lobby from the entrance, where they were smoking. I dont care if you guys think im being uptight.

This gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "he just packed it" on the lanes.
