Best ball for Cheetah pattern????
« on: January 12, 2008, 11:57:17 AM »
I'll be bowling in a cheetah pattern, what ball would perform best?
the center has 20+ years, synthetic brunswick lanes. The other center is 5 years old.
I'm kind of stroker, not much of a hand, medium to low track, PAP is 4 1/2 x 3/4 up
Thanks in advance.

There is no "better ball" for that pattern.  It can play so many different ways depending on the volume used that you could use a very wide array of equipment.

I have been successful using balls from a Super Charge to a T-Road Pearl to a Hit.  I've also seen guys win using Blue Hammers (urethane) and Plastic.

And I've seen people use Angers and SR300s.  It's all about what YOU can make work, where you play the shot - keep in mind it's HEAVY oil, but SHORT oil.

i would say a decently strong ball, because like spinner said, it is heavy oil. however, the backs and outsides fly, so make sure the ball has a good controllable transition. that's the way i score on this pattern. hope i helped!

Heavy oil? What you people talking about, the pattern is 35' in length...

I averaged almost 230 in my PBA league for about 12 games on the Cheetah throwing 2 balls, a Silver Streak Solid and SD-73 Classic, one polished, one at 4000. I like to go hard and straight from out and want the ball to roll off the pattern I went with some medium oil solids. Pearl balls even with some surface still gave me a ton of over/under.

The ball owns on just about anything where the backends are clean.

There is a difference between "distance / length" of oil applied and the "volume" applied. You can lay down a LOT of oil for 35 feet, or a light volume for 35 feet, or anything in between for 35 feet. Type of oil will also affect the ball's reaction as it travels through the first 35 feet. All of those factors will affect which ball would be the best choice.
Just to make it even more wonderful, the heavier the oil is up front, the more will "carry down", making transition more of a challenge.

Sure do miss the days of bringing a single hard rubber ball, pair of shoes, towel, and a few strips of tape to the lanes.

i've used most every ball in my arsenal on the cheetah pattern at pba regional tournaments. it usually boils down to surface----both the lane and the ball. newer brunswick synthetics are very hard and smooth. you may need smoothsanded or dull equipment. older brunswick synthetics and amf synthetics create more friction so your equipment choices may be smoothsanded or polished. wood lanes usually have a lot of friction so your balls may need to be highly polished. trial and error will serve as your guide. try to play this pattern as straight as you can and a far right as you can. the friction will be out near the 1-2-3 board.

I'll do some practice on it Monday on the old Brunswick synthetic
Right now I have a No Mercy Beat'n and a Cherry Vibe, will adjust the surface and see what happens.
Give me some examples of balls with good controllable transition.
Thanks in advance

I just finished bowling on that this past weekend for a JOG qualifier. I averaged 201 over games playing with my fury drilled pin under, OOB finish...The ball was a beast...

My best look was with a Oracle Vision with the Tommy Jones trick drill.
