Roll Off Rules
« on: December 19, 2006, 02:31:21 PM »
Hey everybody, I have come across a situation and I need some imput.

Let's say two teams tie for first-place at the end of a knockdown round. The league bylaws only state a one game roll-off will be required to determine the winner.

The bylaws do not state when the roll-off must occur, not do they state that the same five bowlers per team must bowl in the roll-off.

The League President and Secretary would not make a ruling, only stating that the same five bowlers per team must bowl in the roll-off, whenever it would take place.

Both teams at the time of the third game in the knockdown were informed that we could be dealing with a tie and would have to address the issue.

Team "A" remained following the knockdown, while two bowlers from Team "B" departed and two other bowlers from Team "B" bowled in a scheduled tournament, which followed the league play.

The center had available lanes for the roll-off, but Team "B" did not stay.

Team "A" attempted to contact the local Association office for clarification, but they were closed.

The center turned on a pair of lanes, the League President and Secretary were notified by Team "A" that they were going to bowl the one-game for roll-off purposes and submit the score-sheets and copies from the center for the game bowled.

Has anyone comes across a sitution such as this and what was the ruling?

Thanks in advance,
LAA

I believe that that both teams need to be present to do the roll-off. I also think that you need to see what the league rules say as far as a position round and if subs are allowed. I am assuming your refering the to same lineup, meaning no subs!?!?

The league rules do not specify when a roll-off must occur, nor do they state the lineup.

Team "A" bowled the roll-off as if it were a forfeit situation. Again, which the league officers could not add any guidance.

Team "A" notified the officers that two of the bowlers from the team would not be able to bowl for a significant amount of time following the last league night due to injury.

The officers of this league have turned a relatively simple situation into a pretty hotly contested issue.

I would treat it as a make-up game or like pre- or post-bowling where both teams are present (i.e., not unopposed).  The teams should decide when they can both get together to bowl the tiebreaking game and a league official should be present when they bowl.

If nothing else, have it done at the awards night.  If you normally bowl at 7, then all parties involved should be available then anyway, so get those teams together at 7:00, bowl, then hand out awards when they're done.  Or even while they're bowling.

As a last resort, if they cannot agree to a time, then bowl separately.  There was another thread here about a team pre-bowling, deciding the lanes weren't to their liking, and declaring those pre-bowled scores as not legit.  They wanted to bowl league night and just take the blind scores for the absent members.  If the one team has already forced the issue by bowling (and it was witnessed by a league officer), then those scores stand.  No pooh-poohing allowed if they lose.

Since the bylaws don’t state when the roll off has to occur then it would be up to the teams to decide on a mutually agreed to time for the roll off.

I would think the officers could set a reasonable deadline for it to be completed by. Say within 2 weeks.

As far as lineups go, any legal league lineup should be eligible. If you need 3 regular members to field a team then with 3 regular members they are good even with 2 subs. So team “B” has that option.

Since it is not required in the league bylaws I would not think you could force team “B” to stay for a roll off or forfeit if they didn’t. That may have been the best option given the circumstances but I don’t think you could force it.

My league requires a roll off before the award ceremony that occurs at the normal league scheduled time the next week.

I know that in our league, we can not use any subs the last 2 weeks of bowling, unless there is an unavoidable circumstance. We are on a military base, so there are alot of members that get deployed and are not able to be there. If that is the case, you have to use the league member that has the most games. You can not bring in anyone that you want. This person had to have been on your team for at least half the year and have bowled the most games as a sub.

T.J.

BOWLING IS FUN NO MATTER WHAT YOU SCORE. BUT A 300 IS ALWAYS NICE.

STRIKE ZONE & PYRO. STAND 22 AND THROW 10 OUT TO 5 AND CRUSH THE POCKET. AT LEAST THAT IS THE PLAN OF THE NIGHT...

GOOD LUCK AND GOOD BOWLING!!!

Our rule is you have to have 12 games to pick up a ball on PR night.  Some leagues allow subs with at least 12 games, some don't.
