Same day drilling fee
« on: July 23, 2003, 10:28:09 PM »
Do any other pro shops charge this?  My boss decided to do this, and although it might sound outrageous, I stand behind and fully understand his reasons.  Has any operator here ever had kind of a slow day, and then a customer comes into have a ball drilled, saying he'd like it as soon as possible?  Then you say sure, I can have it done in about 30-45 minutes.  So after that guy leaves, and you start drilling his ball, one or two more customers walk into the shop and start asking about a ball.  By the time you talk to them for a half hour, the other guy comes back and wants to know where his ball is.  Of course it's still sitting on the drilling press with maybe a fingerhole or maybe even nothing but the layout scoring (or grease pencil, whatever you use, we use the pencils) on it.  So he gets upset, and leaves again with an apology and assurances it will be done shortly.

This happens a lot, and we've even had people bring in a ball to be drilled and then they just leave it there, and we're stuck with a drilled ball that they never paid for, and most of the time it's nothing popular enough that we're able to end up reselling.  We have since gone to making sure that people pay up front.  And the same day drilling fee is 5 bucks, and usually we only charge it when there is just one of us at the shop.  I have to leave to go to the little house of horrors now (pro shop, of course), so I'll post more about this later.  Opinions?  Input?

The only way I could see paying a premium is if I know they are swamped but I absolutely have to have it that day.  If I go in and they say they can get it done while I wait, then I don't expect to pay a premium.

To me, thats very greedy..If he has that much business, get another press and have the capability to drill multiple balls at once..

If I went into a place that charged me $5 to drill the ball the same day, I would walk out and find somewhere else to go..

Just me 2 cents..

Damn! Bowlers are so cheap!! Are you that cheap you won't pay an extra $5 to have your ball drilled same day? I mean, if you didn't buy the ball from the pro shop you should expect to be put in the back of the line if he had other customers come in and are buying from thier stock. If I had to have it drilled same day and I trust the driller I would pay the $5 or whatever amount if it was reasonable. Go ahead and go to someone else so they can screw your ball up just to save $5. I can't believe how cheap bowlers are!!

If I bring in 1, 2, or 3 balls to be drilled, my driller usually makes arrangements to be alone to do this for me. If other people come in, I understand it may take longer and I wait, but generally, if he started doing something, like drilling, he continues and makes the next person wait, as they should.

I have brought balls or bought balls from other places, but not very often. One place won't drill your ball now or today, no matter how busy they are. This can be very annoying, especially if there's no one in the shop. Anothe rplace will alway sask if they can do it tomorrow; since I live 90 minutes away, I ask them to do it then.

Charging extra for today's service seems ... not right, BUT the customer should undersatnd that other customers may interrupt. However, once started, that ball should be the driller's priority, not gabbing with with friends or starting to service a new customer when one is already being serviced.

Have you ever been to a place for some kind of service, (not necessariy a pro shop) and they answer every darned phone call spending any and all time needed to take care of them, when you were already there first and in the middle of being taken care of? I think that is very rude.

We take them in the order they come in.

First come first serve.

Besides you can generally be talking to the walk in customer about their needs while you are drilling the ball.

We can layout and drill a ball in 15 minutes or less, if they can't wait that long then to bad.

Actually, our driller has multiple drill presses and can have the ball done the same day without any extra charge.

$5 for drilling?!?! My gosh.  I called to the two pro shops I've gone to to check drilling prices before I got my purple pearl drilled.  I wanted it drilled with finger inserts and a thumb slug.  FIrst place said $70 for everything?!?!!  So I called the second and he did it for $46.  So now I go to him all the time.  A little pricey on the equipment, but an excellent driller.  Hey king, you wouldn't happen to live in ohio would you?

I pay 25 bucks per ball to be drilled while I wait.......granted, he may get in a few customes during that time, but thats part of the buisness and I always plan on enough time for him to tend to his shop and drill. I would never expect to rush something because I am in a hurry, nor would I expect him to keep drilling at the risk of loosing buisness, but he charges a flat fee, reguardless if you wait or come back later.

Okey here.  Um, we charge the 5 bucks when there's only one of us in there, and only if we think we'll be busy.  Usually it's not a problem to just punch a ball out when somebody brings it in.  If you knew Topeka people though, it might be easier to understand.  They're cheap and impatient.  I know it's not restricted to just one city, but most of the people here are like that.  You say 45 minutes, they come back in 40 and have the nerve to get upset if you're not done.  Usually people that come in while I'm drilling a ball are content to look around for a while, but if somebody needs a grip change before league, or someone from out of town comes in and needs some work done, of course they'll have to wait on the ball, but they get really impatient if they have to wait more than 5 or 10 minutes for something.  Then they get upset that we don't give them a discount because they had to wait.

We do a fair amount of business, but hardly ever have lines.  If we do, it's at popular times like Saturday afternoons or a little while before nightly leagues.  Both of us aren't here at the same time very often unless we're busy.  People don't want to wait a day to have their ball drilled, that's the problem.  If we say it'll be a day, we can do most of the drilling at the end of the day after we close so that most of the work isn't interrupted.  People are just so impatient that it handcuffs us a lot.  We have to make sure we don't slip and tell somebody that's ordered a ball "Oh, they usually get here in about two days" because if it takes three days, they just up and don't want the ball anymore.  We had a used Sponge Bob ball that we sold, and after plugging the thumb and redrilling it, the person that assured they were coming back for it never did.  So now there's plug in the ball, and it decreases the value, and we just got stuck with it.

Hamster,

Uou keep reiterating "the Topeka people are very impatient" idea. Well, I can certainly understand how that can interfere and make life miserable. I do not want anyone to talk to my driller while he's working on my ball. It only takes a micro-secomd to screw up $200 worth of ball, time, effort and money. If they are that pushy, $5 extra, surcharge to do it today is within reason.

Jersey people are more impatient than most but most people who into my driller's shop have learned to have patience with him; he's quite a talker; can't shut him up.

HAM .. I understand your shop charges an extra $5 for same day drilling .. I don't see any place where you state HOW MUCH YOU CHARGE FOR DRILLING! Same day would be $5 + ???

I've had a complaint about BALL DRILLING CHARGES for a long time .. you can tell from this post the variation in charges and it BLOWS MY MIND! I can find NO JUSTIFICATION for the HIGH COST other then GREED. If a bowler is having a ball drilled for the first time .. perhaps a slightly higher cost would be acceptable .. but once a driller has your specs .. HIGH PRICE DRILLING IS RIDICULOUS!

Getting back to your original post .. I'd say if the drilling is $35 or less and he wants $5 for same day drilling .. I think I'd pay it .. but if he charges over $35 .. I'D WANT THE BALL DRILLED RIGHT AWAY!!

Man, am I glad I live in this area.  Just got a Cherry Bomb from Shaggy.  Proshop drilled it while I waited, thumb slug, 2 finger grips and drilling.  $11.00.

Bought the wife a new Hammer Blade.  Ball, finger grips, drilling $103 including tax.
