Setting up a control ball
« on: August 14, 2003, 12:04:35 AM »
This is based on my experiences. over 20 balls in 18 months and dozens of drill patterns.

Fo me a control ball means a smooth reacting ball with little to medium movement, especially at the back end.

Overall setup: is 105 deg with the cg on the negative side of the ball.
preferable Pin 1-2( for heavy handed players), 2-3 (for low rev) and 2-3 oz top.

drilling: keep the ball legal without a weight hole. try using a low top and drilling fingers deeper as necessary.

Ball choice: solid resin polished for dry or solid resin for med or a particle for neavy. make sure it is arcing by nature to help your cause.

My best ball so far is a turbo diesel. OOB finish was great for med/fresh/sport shots. polished it is great for drier/flying back ends.

I have mine, 1" pin. pin under bridge, about 5.5" from pap and a 105 deg layout places the cg negative.

in the 1000 grit finish it grabbed the lanes way earlier that my Sling Blade and arced nicely in the midlane with a continuos arc though the pin deck. it also hook more that the sling Blade.

next I wet sanded to 1500 and add a compound gloss finish. the ball now hooks about 10 boards less than my sling blade. the ball has a nice controlled slide and arc to the pocket. where as my sling blade was skid/snap big time.

Overall both finish offered a smooth path to the pocket. however the polished state offered no recover for me. the sanded state offered a little more area.

Now I'm torn between the 2 surface finishes, but most likely will go to a 1500 wet sand to have better control on sloppy lanes.

I think that having a cg on the negative side of the ball is worth while if you have a strong release.

so that is my .02c on how to setup a control ball.
