should i feel bad????
« on: October 21, 2003, 05:47:18 PM »
Ok, i bowled a tournament the other day, juniors from all over the country came, ended up comin 8th over all, not too shabby. But thats not the issue.

So im playin a mate of mine in match play, and im up by 1 pin going into the 10th, both on spares. He gets up, rips the deck, and strikes. Having already won 2 games by striking on the last ball of the 10th *both good shots* i felt confident i could match him. Now i wasnt lined up at all this game, and i was really struggling, so i picked up a different ball. Bowled my shot, ball went ballistic in the heads, just caught the head pin on the brooklyn side, got the mix, and got the X.

Friend gets up, rips the deck again for another X. I stand up, make a 6 board ajustment left, ball again goes nuts in the heads, hits dead solid brooklyn for another X. At this point im feeling pretty cruddy about the whole situation. Gets to the last shot and i dont feel like i should be the one winning the game, but im happy to still be in contention. I walk back and have a drink to sort myself out.

So its down to the last shot. My friend steps up, AGAIN rips the deck for a X. So i stand up, make ANOTHER 6 board ajustment left, this time it has to work right??? I let go of the ball, it got thru the heads, this time it went crazy in the mid lane, thought it was going to go high, just went far enough left, tripped out the 6 pin, and won the game by 1 pin.

This was the last head to head match b4 the positional round, and i felt really crapy, what made it worse was it took 10 mins for them to check all the scores, so i had 10 mins to sit and wallow in my own disgust.

Now i only had 1 open in the game, and my friend had a 4 bagger, and a few missed spares, one being a 7 -. If he had of covered the 2 from that split he would have won regardless, but i still feel like crap about it.... So... should I??? Honestly now i dont want yall to make me feel better if i should be hanging my head in shame lol.

Good luck and high scoring
matt

As far as the Brooklyn breaks go, sometimes they go in your favor sometimes they do not. Someday the shoe will be on the opposite foot and all you can do is take solace in that you performed as well as you could. But often other fortunate happenings early in the match balance things out.

So in effect concern yourself with only your performance and learn from it. I would feel disappointed as well that I won with those breaks but if I made the change and threw good shots with the new ball and line then accept what happened. Learn a lesson in what you should have done to get to the pocket be that changes in line, speed, ball, release, etc. If you didn’t throw the shots well try to learn why that happened as well.

Learn and go on. There are too many other more important things in life to dwell on this.

i agree with leftside 100 percent. if you get the X, take the X. don't second guess it because the bowling gods might not be so nice next time you find the pocket. Take the good with the bad, and take all the luck the pins are willing to give you.

Matt,

Yes, but you must have been lined up to be in contention in the first place.  Take the breaks, because the bad ones will pop up when you don't expect it.
I want to have a 220+ average like everybody else around here, so give me fresh oil.

What's that old saying, "strike for show, spare for dough"?  Don't worry about the "lucky" strikes you had.  You will probably be beaten by them more times than you will benefit from them.  If he missed "a few spares" he cannot honestly think he lost by 1 pin only from those 3 lucky shots.  I agree with Bones, acknowledge the lucky break and move on.  BUT... Don't forget, he wasted opportunities to seize the match as well.

I agree with Sawbones  When I played Tennis, and in a match, sometimes we'd hit the net and the ball would trickle over and you'd win the point.  We always apologize when that happened.

Tell him that this is why bowling is so stupid, because he threw the ball much better, but you got the breaks on it's the only reason you won.

I'd have to question why you'd change balls and not have a clue what it would do in the first place.  Second, making a 12 board adjustment and still not having a clue is something I would work on.

We had a 180 average bowler shoot 771 the other night and everyone who saw it said he said over half of his strikes were Brooklyn.

Thanks everyone,

Its not so much that i didnt have a clue, its just a house that it notorious for every lane being different. I was using a matrix tps 3, and it was turning heaps, so i picked up my amf hawk, turns a hell of a lot less, and it ended up turning more... The place is very confusing, luckily that night they ripped up the lanes and are in the process of puttin in synthetics, that got a hoorah from everyone present haha.

good luck and high scoring

I still use the same saying of "I'd rather be lucky than good any day".  if the other person comes thru and rolls a 190 because they just couldn't get a strike and every frame was a single pin,  but you roll a 300 because you can carry every shot by hitting the 3-6 pocket, you should still take it.  thats just the way the cookie crumbles.
