Slumps-------
« on: November 06, 2003, 06:39:42 AM »
OK, I am in a huge slump. There is something mechanical I am doing wrong and I cannot find it. No one else can find it either. I have always believed that when you are in a slump it is better to "bowl" your way out of it. That is very difficult to do when you do not even feel like throwing a bowling ball at all.

I know everyone to one degree or another goes through a slump. Kind of tough when you are in a slump and a bad night is still around 600. I guess this slump is bothering me more than any I have had before. SO much so that I really felt the need to vent, and I am sorry for taking your time on this subject.

OK, I feel a little better now. Thanks

Bones,

If it were only a night or two I would say fine, that will happen every now and then. This has gone on for probably 6 weeks or so. I know I will find it eventually----but until then I have to suffer through all of the bad shots.

OK, can I join your rant?  Pretty much this last month or so has seemed off for me...  I honestly don't remember the last night I put more than 3 X's together in a row, much less the last 600 I shot.  Somehow my avgs are still in low 190's ??  Anyhow, just shot a whopping 425 tonight - which is bad enough.  But what really concerns me is how I reacted to it.  No, I didn't get out of control cussing and hitting stuff - which is the problem.  Usually I'd be livid and making a spectacle of myself for starting out with 138 and 116.  But tonight I didn't really care.  Just had a "so what else is new, who gives a sh--" attitude.  This funk is starting to bother me to the point I'm thinking of taking 2 or 3 weeks off (yeah, I'm bad enough to consider paying subs $45 a week to cover my 3 leagues).  and I've been thinking about that for a while, not just because of how I did tonight.  I think this is almost the icing on the cake...  Anyhow, Thanks for listening to me whine - you can now pass the cheese!

Thanks for taking the time to help us out Bones.  I know for a fact it is poor mechanics in my case, as I cannot throw the same shot twice.  I will bury the pocket one shot, plow through the nose on the next, and then leave a washout from over-adjusting on the 3rd.  If I leave more than 1 pin for a spare, seems like 90% of the time I miss it.  Fortunately, one of the alleys I bowl at will allow me to shadow bowl, and I think I'll try to get down there this weekend and work on this.  Funny how we will continue to struggle - thinking all the while we will get out of the slump someday, yet don't think about how to practice effectively to break the string.  Thanks again, I'll let you know how it goes.

Well I know how you guys are feeling, for the past couple of weeks i have been in a bit of a funk, and the only place i seem to be bowling well is on my Weds league and i am shooting consistent low 600's nothing great but nothing bad.

now my real problem is my Monday and Thursday league.

My Monday league has a cake shot yet, i cant seem to score, and i am down about 20pins from last yr too.  And of course the place everyone scores is the track, yet it gets burned up in the first game.

So I opt for playing inside of 4th arrow out to about 12.  And like last monday u used two balls,  started good with one, then went bad, switched to the other had a couple good shots then bad ones, went back to the other had some good shots then bad ones, and back n forth all nite.

Now my Thursday league, i dont know what to think.  i had one month where i went 590-718-622-731, and thought i had it figured out.  well since then i shot 560-530 and tonight i shot like 480.  The house has wood lanes, and u get carry down in practice, and alot of the guys on the league use plastic or some have Manhattan Rubber.

And it seems the only time u do get a good shot is when everyone is using reactive, and sometimes that doesnt even happen.   Some lanes hold the shot, some dont lol.  But since i have been on all the lanes i know what lanes give me a good shot and what dont.  But its still a struggle

I've just gotten out of a slump that's lasted since May.  Most of it was wrist, hand, and arm problems, but a slump's a slump.  Just take a deep breath, go back to the basics, and when in doubt, just throw the ball.  Forget trying to bowl, just throw the ball from wherever you can hit the pocket from and hope you carry.  Then once you get some scores and a little confidence, slowly try to work it out.
