Small Town Tour
« on: August 25, 2003, 09:59:37 AM »
I've been kicking around this idea of running a bowling tournament that tours around the state of Michigan and hits all of the different small towns along the way.  Well, I'm doing it.

The idea behind it was that (at least in Michigan) most of the tournaments seem to hit the same big houses from year to year, and through my business I've had a lot more fun visiting the small town bowling centers than the big city centers.  Sooooo, other people are missing out!!!  I want to give people a reason to visit these centers too!

And I'm talking SMALL towns here.  Pinconning is playing host to the first event.  It's a very small town up north of Saginaw/Bay City area.  They make cheese there.  Kinda like Wisconsin.  It's cool though...they have this nice, cozy little 24 lane center with a cheese restaurant/store attached to the building.  They say the store does more business than the bowling center!

The manager there is a cool guy and I think it's going to be a lot of fun running this tournament there.  There's going to be one big qualifier on Sunday, Oct. 5 with match play following.  They are also going to hold 7 other qualifying squads during the week, with each squad having its own cut score.  With a 1 in 5 cash ratio, each squad has to have at least 5 bowlers for the squad to go.  The tournament is handicap, and there's also a scratch division that is just based on total score for the 3-game set.

The tournament only costs $40 for each division and $70 for anybody that wants to bowl in both.  I really hope this goes over well as I think it's neat to meet people in different towns, and fun to bowl in places that mose of us have never bowled before.

I just wanted to share this tournament idea with the rest of you and maybe get some feedback on it.  If you like, I can post a reply after the tournament is completed and tell you all how it went!

Hey there Sherm.  Yeah, I now have info at my website about it.  I also built a website FOR it yesterday.  Here's the link for it...

http://smalltowntour.michiganbowling.com

I'm still looking for centers to run these tourneys during this year, and during the next few years!  I'd like to keep the tournaments spread out a little bit each year, and then run them in different centers next year, and again the following year.

What center do you have in mind?

And thanks Seadrive.  I'll certainly post about the turnout and how things went!!!

I don't live there anymore, but there were about 4 smaller centers within 15 miles of Adrian, MI.  I believe they were all between 12-24 lane houses.  You might check around there.  There were 2 houses in Tecumseh, 1 in Adrian, and 1 in Blissfield, and I think there was another out around the Speedway, if memory serves me correctly.  I'm sure there are a ton more around the Lansing, Monroe, and Detroit areas.

Hey there 9andawiggle,

Yes, I plan on holding one of these events at Lenawee Recreation in Adrian this season.  Nice place and nice owner.  I've never been to the Blissfield center or the Tecumseh centers, but those are possibilities for upcoming seasons.  I hear Litchfield-Jonesville Lanes is nice too!!!

I'm going to have a blast with this, I can see that already!

Cass City, huh...

I don't think I have that one listed on my site!!!  Can you do me a huge favor and next time you go there, get their address and phone # and I'll add them to my site.  I recently found out there's another center out west near Ludington that I don't have listed either.  Darn yahoo, that's where I got all of my info!

Ok, I've booked another event.  300 Bowl in Alma during the week of Dec. 8-Dec. 14.  Very nice 36 lane center!!!  I believe Capitol Bowl in Owosso is going to host one too, and I'm meeting with Coloma Lanes in Coloma next week.  Oh yeah, Sandusky (yes, Sandusky, Michigan, not Ohio!!!) is probably going to host one at the end of November.

Thanks for the good feedback everybody!  I think this is going to be fun!

Yeah Lenawee Rec is a nice center.  I don't see it on the schedule yet, but keep us posted when that comes together.  That is close enough I might be able to make it if my schedule would allow.

Tecumseh has 2 alleys, one I think is around the airport? and the other one is on the southwest side, towards Adrian.  It has been a few years since I was in the area, so please forgive the lack of solid directions or the name of the center.  I'll dig around at home and see if I can find anything.  The one closest to Adrian (southwest of Tecumseh) was pretty decent as well - same # of lanes as Lenawee Rec I think...but don't hold me to that.

I've booked another event in Alma (south of Mt. Pleasant) for the week of Dec. 8-Dec. 14.  36 lane center!!!  YEOW!!!  I'm also meeting with Coloma Lanes (west of K-zoo) this week and Oxford (north of Auburn Hills).  Going to call Denny @ Lenawee in Adrian this week too!

I really hope these tournaments go over well.  I'm going to work hard to promote these events.  I hope some of you can come out and bowl in them as well!
