Straightest Spare Ball Currently On The Market???
« on: October 26, 2003, 08:28:00 PM »
I am curious what ball currently on the market is the straightest for shooting those pesky 10 pins (right-hander).  My old Blue Dot was great, but it is pretty tore up and I would like to replace it.  I have heard that Columbia 300 now uses the same cover on both the White Dots and Blue Dot which has hurt the Blue Dot's reputation a little.  Is this true?

I was looking at the Spare Storm and the hardness of that ball is a whopping 84-86!  Check it out:  http://www.stormbowling.com/ball/ball.asp?ballid=79&ballname=SPARE+STORM%99  Would this be a better choice now that the Blue Dot's original coverstock is no more?

The hardness of the Blue Dot's cover is 75-78.  Here check it out:  http://www.columbia300.com/gear/balls.cfm?bid=76

So in summary, should I go with another Blue Dot, or the Spare Storm?

Bob you are indeed correct.  Hand position at the release is really what makes the ball move.  I do use a yankee doodle for most of my ten pins, but not to sound too lazy, i just don't want to go and get it from my bag.  I can just flatten my wrist and still hit a 10 pin no problem with my freak out.

I'm in the no spare ball club, my Diesel Particle will happily go straight at 10 pins

Totally agree with everyone about every ball hooks unless you learn to throw it straight.
Some of the elderly guys used to think these plastic ball that we use today were hook monsters in their day.
So I say get one you like the look of and learn to throw it straight. Best advice I ever recieved.. Just dont go too far and do what I did last night, BACK UP 3 spares in a row..IDIOT I know. I called it reverse drift. My oppo just said thanks

My obvious choice for the straightest spare ball is the White Dot

However, I did pick up a Viz-A-Ball featuring Ed, Edd & Eddy from Cartoon Network on Ebay.  I'll get it drilled when my White Dot finally crumbles into dust

Don't expect that White Dot
to crumble very soon. I have a
friend of mine who still uses
one that's at least 25 years old!
The more I practice,the luckier I get.

I suggest and use a Spare Storm.  The ball goes dead straight.

I've never been able to understand all the yakyak I see on here from all these people claiming to be able to adjust their axis rotation and tilt, and speed, for whatever the lane conditions demand--but seem to have to have some kind of teflon rock to throw at spares.  If you throw it straight, it will go straight--no matter what it is.

I'm happy with my XXXL. Since I don't have a lot of hand this ball goes straight enough for me. Hooks only extremely dry. (for me)

Who's going to tell the PRO's that the reason their SPARE ball is CURVING .. is BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO THROW IT???

Blue Dot with a heavy coat of finesse-it. Wouldn't move a board on concrete.

I like my Ebonite Maxim with the pin in the palm for shooting 10 pins.  Goes really straight.  Sometimes not very forgiving.  I did have a white dot drilled to be aggressive for when the lanes were scorched.  Worked great with a very nice arc.
