Strategies for heavy oil
« on: February 13, 2005, 07:22:43 AM »
Ran into an extraordinary amount of oil in league the other night.  I struggle trying to get enough revs on my ball as it is, (only around 290 rpm or so), and noticed it wasn't just me last night, another guy on the next pair over was getting the ball to hook on the backend, but he was playing very straight, and usually he's inside and bending the ball a lot.  I had my Rule, Triple Xtreme X-Factor, and Yeah Baby!.  The Triple Xtreme actually seemed to be giving me the most hook of any of them, surprisingly, but even with that ball, and playing very straight (almost pointing it to the pocket) i struggled with carry.  6 10 pins in the first game as well as an 8-10 and 5-10 split, and a 5 and another 5-10 later in the night.  I struggled to about 550 or so after a 160 game to start, but felt like I didn't have any real answers for what to do.  I tried to keep my speed down and use whatever dry I could find, but was just lost.  I've considered getting my old Azure Pro Zone out, and sanding it down to about 220 or so, just in case of emergencies like this, but I hate to take up a spot in my bag for a ball I'd almost never use.  Just wondering what some of your strategies and ideas are for situations like this.  Thanks.

Lower the ball in my stance a little.  This cuts down on the hieght of backswing.. and thus the speed of the ball.  I usually try to get a little less side rolls as that causes the ball to skid (more up the back or the ball).. of course play straighter...  and I usually carry a scotch-brite pad in my bag...  after one or two practice shots, I can tell they are flooded... I'll either scuff up the bowtie area for a little more traction or go over the entire ball for even more bite.  These are situations where you just have to accept that big scores aren't likely going to come... just keep the ball near the pocket and make spares...

Thanks for the help everyone, I do have a bit of help in that that Blue Pro Zone I talked about is 16 lbs., when I usually throw 15's.  We usually don't see that much oil in league, but I'm glad I got some ideas in case it happens again.  The other thing that hurt was it is a handicap league, and the team we were playing was almost all lower average bowlers, so it didn't bother them nearly as much as our team, but we we're still able to win 2 games at least.  Now I think I'll have a little bit better handle on what to do, and hopefully it will pay off next time.
