Talk about a rough week...

Ok...

Tim Mack only made about $50,000 this week- yet he didn't win any kind of title. He finished 2nd at the high roller, and finished 2nd in the Mini-Eliminator main events.

Sure $50,000 isn't bad... but I'm sure a title would have been sweeter.

the life of a bowler........and your'e calling  50K a rough week ?!?!?!  Sort that out for a second......50K in a WEEK !!!!  Over 7K a day?!?!

Yeah....if I had just won 50 grand, I would not be crying about not winning the title.  I am not saying he did, either.  I would cry more about how much is coming out for taxes, if anything.  THAT is the rough part of winning 50K.

I've also had the pleasure to see Tim Mack bowl. He is in great physical shape, which allows him to bowl the way he bowls... for long periods of time... hence he can make all that money.

I heard Haynes made about $25,000 last week, including winning one of the sweepers at the Roller.  Might ask him tonight if I see him at league about the brackets, etc.

While we are on the subject of Tim Mack, can I add that he is also a very great representative for this sport and his sponsors, Storm. His work on the international scene has made him very well respected throughout Europe and Asia, and he is also a very good showman with a bag full of tricks on the lanes! I can remember bowling my first major event on the lanes with him here in england in 1998, after having seen him on TV over here for a televised competition. After the qualifying he chatted to me for a while, and gave me a lot of useful advice and observations. Nice guy, one hell of a bowler too!

Sounds like the kind of rough week I need.  I got to see Haynes and Mack bowl last year in a Red Hot at Carolier in NJ.  Both made the cut, but Haynes must have been slumping since he only shot 857.  I'm still trying to figure out how you throw 34 out of 36 and make it look easy.  I'd have enjoyed watching them more if I wasn't wasting my time shooting 690.

The problem I have with these tournaments is competing with the professional amateurs who do this for a living.  If I'm in a squad with them, I skip the brackets and side pots unless it's on an announced sport or flat oil pattern.  The True Amateur Challenge addresses the issue by capping winnings, but so far, they're only paying $20,000 on top compared to $50,000 at the Mini and the Roller.

Even the True Amateur Challenge, which I bowled last week, has some people there that I wonder about.  Each day I would look at the bracket board and see a name I recognize, and that name would have won $2,000 by the end of the day.  The next day it would be another familiar name.  Sure, they aren't PBA National guys, but they aren't just Joe Bowler off the street, either.  While I was working to make the cut to the finals, many of them aren't even concerned about the finals.  Its all in the brackets and sweepers.

Wouldn't it be interesting if the Roller, Mini and TAC websites, in addition to putting the tournament results, would publish the bracket result?

NevadaBowl - I saw on a few other sites there were some ex-PBA members at the TAC.  I haven't seen the results yet, but I'm sure there will be some familiar names.  I agree with your assessment of the brackets.  I'd love to see them posted, but then again, so would the IRS.

I've bowled a few scratch sport shot tournaments in York, PA.  (suburbanbowlerama.com). With a $30 entry fee and 1st place between $300 and $400 they get over 50 entries because they run a bunch of brackets.  Even when some of the PBA Eastern Region bowlers show up (Kasimakis, Tryniski, Reale, Pelchar) you can still move up half your brackets with a 200.  They post the dollar amount for the Big Winner of the brackets, and it's not unusual to see this figure over $1000.  Last week they ran a 10 game marathon with brackets 1-3, 2-4, 3-5, etc., and had over 70 entries.  On the flip side, the Philadelphia ABT Masters Division had 6 entries last week and paid $150 for 1st.
