The Gathering 2009 - UPDATE
« on: November 17, 2008, 03:37:33 PM »
I heard from Ron and he is good for whenever we decide.  The group had to make a decision to skip Vegas.  SOOOOOO let's make it official for July 24 - 26.

For those new to BR, this is an annual gathering of bowlers from all over.  It basically involves bowling, socializing, bowling, eating, bowling, eating, bowling, drinking, bowling, eating, and oh did I mention bowling .  Our own Magic Carpet, Mrs Magic Carpet, and the staff at Creekside host this gathering each year.  They are amazing!

Friday night the center has a Mixed Scotch Doubles that many participate in.  Saturday is the Bragging Rights Tournament for the coveted "Bragging Rights Champion T-Shirt."  Sunday, for those who hang around, Ron offers some one-on-one coaching.  For those who arrive early, it is impromptu.

Toma and Nollster have traditionally organized some golfing and Strider has opened his house for pool and poker Saturday night after the "official" dinner at "Golden Corral."

Many stay at the Extended Stay, Haines Mall.  Due to a situation last year, I personally will be looking at other options.

Creekside Lanes
1450 Trade Mart Blvd
Winston-Salem, NC 27127
(336)771-9800

Hotel most have stayed at in the past:
Extended Stay America Winston-Salem Hanes Mall Blvd
1995 Hampton Inn Ct
Winston-Salem, NC 27103
(336)768-0075

As details are finalized, I will update with specifics.  I have been to the previous 6 and always look forward to the next one.  If you are even remotely considering attending, do so, you won't regret it.  I realize the current economic times may make it tough, but I am looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.  This year I plan to do more than be scorekeeper at the Bragging Rights Tournament !

Good date pick TP, I just realized that I have to coach at the BTM Super School July 30-Aug 1st. I am glad we didn't pick that weekend.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again and hope to see lots of new faces this year!

Bowl great!

I am glad it works out.  The weekend chosen keeps us basically the same as the past few years and a selfish reason - if the funding is there I will have to be in San Diego the week of August 3rd - 7th for training.  I didn't want to leave NC early.

Where is Super School going to be this year?

Count Kat and me in again. We'll try to get the brother and nephew again too. There's one more person that will likely join us if he hasn't moved back to Virginia (and maybe even then).

Jess, not exactly hurt, and thanks for asking.  I don't think I posted this here, but I had to go in Oct 14th to have an aortic aneurism fixed and a leaky aortic valve replaced. It's been quite an experience, but I managed to make it through ok with just minor complications.  I'm now the bionic man. I went back to work on Nov 11th on "light duty" so I'm definitely on the mend. I guess the doc wants to make sure my ribs and chest have knitted back together before I can bowl again, and it's driving me crazy just watching.

I work in Surgery and we do lots of scheduled AAAs when the Anyueresm is caught early and can be fixed at a Dr's leuisre.

but when a AAA isn't caught early and bursts  50% of people that make it to the hospital with an AAA make it to Surgery, out of that 50%, Only 50% will get off the table alive, out of that 50% only 50% will walk  out of the hospital alive.

Conisder yourself lucky that is a big deal beleive me a very big deal indeed

Hey, thanks, Mainzer.  We had been monitoring it for a year and it hadn't grown.  What made the decision was the leaky valve.  Now, since the arrythmia hasn't cured itelf, I'll be going in for an overnight stay to put in an ICD.  I'm just glad to still be here, and to have as few problems (relatively) as I've had. I've read and heard of a lot of horror stories, so I count myself as lucky.  And each day that another tube was removed I was appropriately grateful.  I had great people taking care of me, and I can't thank enough all the pre-op and post-op people that were there and contributed to my well being.    I can't miss the Gathering.  We'll be there, and I still plan on giving Joe a run for his money.

Sweet - saving money is a good thing.

Since many of us show up Friday afternoon for some friendly games and what not, is anyone interested in doing a random-draw doubles friendly-like competition or anything? I ran something similar for my company's Christmas party and we had a blast. No money, just fun. It'd be even easier for me to run with people who know how to bowl

TP - let me know if you want me to break this out into a separate thread.

If I'm there, I'd be all over that. That sounds like it would be great fun.

It is better to keep it all together.  What I'll do as we get closer is consolidate all the activities with names of those interested.

Count me in ... I pity the fool who pulls me as their partner

I'd already informed Ron and haven't told Toma yet, but it looks like I won't be making it this year....New software release for the lab on 7/20 and we probably won't be stable until some time in 2011!!    Of course no one checked with me before planning this 2+ year project!!!
