The goal of handicap leagues
« on: January 18, 2008, 12:45:07 PM »
Is the goal of handicap leagues to decide who the best bowler is or to simply have a good time. And I am talking about social mixed leagues and not high average handicap leauges. Every week I sub in this one league on friday nights, it seems that certain bowlers live to crush bowlers that are in the lower average realm, and are constantly giving the a hard time. When ever these bowlers win, it's great, win they lose, it's all about sandbagging. When ever I offer to bowl these certain bowlers for money, I here the same thing, it's all about the ability and not the money. So I guess my question is, why would a good bowler bowl against a lesser apponents, and take joy in beating him or her.

The only lower average bowlers I take any joy in beating are the ones that can't stop telling how good they are or how they are going to whip my tail. I always say "Good luck to you. Bowl great." When they throw two in a row they want to be in your face telling you about it. However as you state when the time comes to put up or shut up they are never to be found.
Now to your actual question. Handicapped leagues should be for fun or the fact that a scheduling conflict prevents you from bowling in a more skilled or scratch league. That being said I always am competing against myself whenever I step out on the lanes. On Sunday I bowl on a four person league with three women. Not because we have a chance in hell to win the league but because it is one of the few times during the week when I can bowl a league and we have a good time together.
