Thumb issue
« on: November 05, 2003, 06:39:56 PM »
Went to the PWBA/Ebonite camp in April 2002 and while there, they changed the pitch of my thumbhole to zero.  I have had no problems with this drilling and actually like it better than what I had previously.  In the last month or so, I have noticed that on my first few shots, there appears to be a bundle of nerves at the base of my thumb that when the ball leaves my hand and rubs this spot, the tip of my thumb goes numb.  Usually, after a few shots, I seem to adjust and it stops.  Last night, it happened again, but the very tip of my thumb stayed numb the rest of the night.  It's still a bit numb this morning.  Also, over the course of the last 11 months, I've lost 40lbs., so the size of my thumb/fingers has changed.  I've added tape to my thumbholes to get them to fit, but was wondering if this numbness is due to a drilling issue/bad fit or if it's just a queer medical thing?  I suppose the weight loss could have affected my span a bit as well....?  Anybody got any ideas?

This is often a bevel issue. You could try rounding the top part of the thumbhole where it touches the nerve.

Also thumbhole that is too large also causes this as well. If you end up bending your thumb (and you can only bend your thumb in the hole if it is too large) to hang onto the ball then you add pressure to this area. Since you are using tape this should help that issue.

As the Meatloaf song said so eloquently,

"Stop right now!!, Before we go any further"!!!!,
"Do you love your hand!""", "Then put the ball down,""

"Will you love it?", "Will you love it", "Will you love it tomorrow?".

Jack you've got a problem.  Right here in River City.

Put the ball down and nobody gets hurt.

Adding forward pitch to a thumbhole while leaving the span the same is the same feeling effect as lenghtening the span.  Shooting or numbing pain in the thumb is ALWAYS indicitive of potential permanent and dangerous nerve damage to the thumb.

The solution is always adding front bevel.  Front bevel is the portion of your thumb under the flat holding surface of your thumb.  Stop and add a gentle amount of bevel to your front thumb surface immediately.

A long time ago I put a post in drilling called "What Mo Pinel taught me about bevel".  It is a great thing to know and probably if you search back about 120 days in the drilling forum you will find it.

GET This PROBLEM FIXED IMMEDIATELY!!!
