It depends on what kind of hit is leaving the 7. A light flush hit will blow the headpin into the sidewall and back across the deck without ever hitting the 7. At the same time, the 5 is pushed in front of the 7.
A high flush hit will leave a 7 when the 5 pin blows out the 8 and neither impacts the 7 while the headpin gets dropped in the channel around the 7.
The adjustment for the 7-pin leave is made depending on which type of hit is leaving the spare. You have to be observant of all parts of the delivery from release to target to ball rotation to first impact at the pins to where the ball falls in the pit. Scoring will improve when you A) become more observant of what your ball is doing the entire time it's in motion and B) make adjustments based on that information.
