Tips without grips
« on: January 01, 2009, 06:29:28 PM »
Okay I go through grips really quickly about every 30 games i need to replace them.

And i know you can drill balls with fingertip drill but no grips so i was wondering what are the advantages/disadvantages of this because its getting pretty expensive replacing my grips every 30 games.

Thanks in advance

compared to using grips, you get alot faster out of it and you dont grap it that much, but if not drilled correctly it can ruin youre fingers. some might sey you will get a tad less rotations with it but it is much cleaner

At the beginning of this season I did two things to minimize the amount of stress I was putting on my tendons in my arm and my wrist.

I dropped to 14# from 15# and went to no finger inserts.  Luckily my driller uses a mill and can oval finger holes as well as thumb holes.

I made the switch to all no insert equipment because I noticed that there was a completely different feel when switching between equipment with inserts and stuff without.  With inserts the effective bridge width is doubled for me due to the thickness of their walls.

I prefer to keep my finger holes sharp to keep a consistent feel from ball to ball.  That also keeps me from trying to hit up on the ball, which is likely why my arm and wrist hate me now as it is.

I did the same thing about 3 years ago by going to no grips. I carry a cordless dremel in the bag and when I get a new ball I play around with it to get the fingers set up right. I am way cleaner in my release, much less apt to grab the ball, have a MUCH MUCH more consistant feel, and have had no tendon issues since I have left inserts behind.

Is it for everyone? definately NOT.

The time MUST be taken to make the proper fit. and proper pitches are important too...one mistake feel a lot of bowlers make is that more forward pitch in the fingers (pitch toward the thumb) will create more revs..... proper fit and technique have much more to do with the amount of revs..... imo.

Don't be afraid to use tape in the fingers just as you would your thumb..

I have seen people use small urethane slugs so every ball has same exact feel to it, easy to change out if you screw up the oval just switch the slug with a new one.

I went to just drilled finger tips, back in 2001? i believe.   the only reason i did was during the 2000 season, I was experiencing skin tears in my ring finger, right at the joint, it basically looked like i was cutting myself after a nite of bowling.   So i got rid of the inserts and it helped alot!   But it eventually came back, so now i use finger tape and havent had an issue since then.

I also when i get a ball drilled, keep the fingers very sharp, I like the feel, because i think the sharper edges help me get more revs on the ball, and also helps me keep my hand relaxed.

Plus, I look at it this way,  everytime, i get a ball drilled, I dont have to worry about my fingers swelling, and going to a different ball and the inserts being too small cuz they are newer!

Also, your release will be smoother!  you might think your loosing revs, but your probably gaining revs.

There are many pluses to not having grips. I haven't used them in many years but the downside is you can injure your finger joints like I have and did if the ball is not drilled correctly.

Sending Buzzhead a pm.

1c3,

as most guys have said, about the finger pitches, I know my driller at the time, basically started from scratch again, to make sure he got them right.

i'll be honest and say I wish someone would have introduced me to the no-grip finger tip when i was 18.
