Twister Pins - Pros And Cons?
« on: July 08, 2009, 08:55:53 AM »
I heard that my center is thinking of using Twister pins because they are supposed to last longer.  For those who are already seeing them in their home centers, what are the pros and cons of these pins?  I remember having a difficult time when I had to bowl in some Nationals that had them, but that was a while back and the technology may have changed some since then?

I bowl with them in the winter time and it can get very frustrating. a lot of times you know you threw an excellent shot but the pins seem to either bounce out of the way or they do nothing. messengers are pretty rare at this house with the twister pins.

im glad that they last longer and could save the house money but im sure some of the bowlers quit just because of how evil those pins are.

ive seen some weird leaves... such as 2 or MORE 8 pin leaves in a row by a righty. and since you dont get much pin action 9 pins are always left standing on high pocket or high angle hits.

i dont think they are terrible... but i do think that they should somehow be changed so you get at the very least... SIMILAR pin action because the way they carry is completely different! at that house I actually TRY to hit light as it either strikes or leaves makable spares. not so when hitting high flush

In the past flush hits didn't seem to carry as well.  More 8 and 9 pin leaves. Light hits carried great.

I've read that they can cause havoc with some pinsetters and are more likely to slide out of range than wood pins.

I'm just used to them, they don't bother me so much but I do get the wow that carried at other houses. The pins do cause some more leaves that are a little odd but never anything that would make me want to quit, so what if you leave a stone 8 or a few more single pins.

They don't carry as well..

And look kinda funny when the top busts off of them...

After a while they look like crap all scraped up and dented

We use to have them for years but we eventually talked the owner to go wood

Its got to be easy, or we will not play. Right??

For some of us, the more challenging the game, the more involved we get, and the more enjoyment we get out of it, along with our successes and failures.

A few years back the place where I bowl put Twisters in and a friend of mine mentioned that lots of bowlers did not like them. Well within the space of a couple of weeks of them being put in,I rolled a pair of three hundreds.

Can't say I have found them to be any different to most of the other brands of pins I have come across. For me its always been the state of the back ends rather than the pins the dictates whether there are spates of wierd leaves of lack of carry.

Anyone ever bowled when those gold Brunswick pins were used? They sounded a bit strange when I saw any telecast where they were on show.

I haved used them in a older amf house they were like popcorn when they got them " twister 2's" a lot of 9 pins and 4 9's on high flush shots. Most light shots carry better they are different but for some better. Older guys in our house have been scoring better since they went in. So take it for what it is.

From my limited experience:

Pocket = 9 pin
Slightly high = 4/7 or much worse
Light = massive mixing strikes and messengers

My overall scores weren't terribly different, but how I got there sure was.  You'll definitely be shooting at some head scratching leaves.

A house here tried them a few years ago. This house is notoriously dry a it is hard to get the pins to really fly around anyway. I think the this is why I carried as well or better than now. Yes some of the leaves were definitely odd, but scores were about the same. The sound they make was harder to get used to than how they fell.

I remember hearing that light hits carried better with Twister pins but thought that that remark was only for when they were used at Nationals.  Apparently not.  If we do go to them, it should be interesting and fun.
