Urethane
« on: March 18, 2010, 10:02:46 AM »
Urethane obviously has been revitalized with balls like the Natural and such. During league I'm finding a lot of people trying to play in the burn with urethane instead of throwing weaker reactive equipment. When is it a good choice to throw urethane? It seems to me by throwing urethane you give away some of your error room simply by throwing that ball and cannot exploit the condition nearly as well. Is that a fair estimate?

For me, I am blessed with too much hand, not enough ball speed, and way too much stubbornness to do anything about either of the proceeding.  Therefore if my reactives are over-reacting at the breakpoint, I can switch to my urethane ogre which typically will keep the same breakpoint but have a smooth backend reaction while maintaining carry.

I like urethane cause I can get away from all the crap every one else is doing move right and play be myself and laugh when they trying run left to find oil I can throw a shot with a small swing around 10 and carry with a urethane ball

I like urethane for two reasons:
- it does not react as itchy as a "real" reactive
- it tends not to burn up in the heads easily

I have a high track, about 300RPM and play at 14-15mph. Dry lanes or short oil can be big trouble, and I have a hard time getting reactive balls down the lane without early break or burn-up.
Urethane or urethane-like blends have been so far the best choice for me on such light conditions (Slate Blue Gargoyle is great on dry lanes, and my Black Pure Hammer is the next step up - both are wonderfully arcing pieces). They are also good for outside lines, 2nd arrow or less straight down, just as an alternative to avoid traffic on deeper lines.
It is a subjective thing, but I think urethane (with a core, though) is a very good alternative to a higher RG reactive. Less flippy, but that's just the selling point for me.

I agree. When we get 10 guys all trying to play inside with the biggest oil soakers they can buy I like to go outside with urethane or plastic. I can sit out there by myself and not have to worry about constant transition.

I kind of fall into this situation. I have tried to throw the ball with less hand. I have some success but most of the time I struggle with it. So I switch to Urethane and sometimes plastic (XXXL). I might lose some of that power I get with a reactive, but I am throwing the ball at the speed I am comfortable with. It's not going to over react.

Yeah, I've thought about purchasing a Natural for league, because if I don't I think I'm going to quit leagues altogether and just bowl tournaments on sport shots.

Lately, I've been on a tear if I can find a lane with hold, but I can't shoot a great set because I just can't carry due to corners and stone 9's.

Anyone else average higher on a sport shot than in league? Ever since I've moved to regularly bowling on a sport pattern my league average has plummeted drastically to a 207, but I'm averaging 224 on the sport league at a harder house than my normal league house.

I've found with the Visionary Ogre Urethane the best of both can be had.  The core and design hit hard and carry way better than older Urethanes do, yet it is fully controllable and can even be thrown as a spare ball too.  Also the other Visionary Ogre's seem to be all the great features of reactive bowling balls, hit hard and carry, yet behave closer to urethane in the controllability and avoid soaking up oil as fast and having to move inside as fast.  So I think there better blends of urethane (since all reactives are urethane based) which get closer to the good features of pure urethane, yet also still have all the great features of modern reactive balls.  The Ogre Urethane is proof that you can make a pure urethane ball and make it carry just fine, give it a good strong core and good design.  Also balls like the natural aren't even pure urethane, a small part reactive still, there's a continuum between oil soaking reactives and pure urethane which may be where the key is to being able to avoid the issues people have that switch to pure urethane in certain conditions.
