USBC Coach Certification
« on: February 02, 2008, 03:43:26 AM »
How does one go about getting USBC certification as a coach. How long does it take and where do you attend classes.

Thanks

You are correct about no waiting period between Level 1 & Bronze.

As I understan it after conversations with my coach and other coaches, the reason for the waiting period between Level 1 & 2 is Level 2 involves analyzing videos.  Without the practical experience, it is extremely difficult to understand the video analysis.

Bronze is more of a continuation of the Level 1 and, while practiacal experience is helpful, it is not necessary to complete the Bronze level.

While Silver is a continuation of Bronze, as I understand it, analysis is a big part of the program.

Sorry to hear Erin that you judge a coach on their ability to bowl well and not on their ability to teach well.

Yep I have not ever seen a very good coach that was not also a very good bowler or at one time in their lives a very good bowler, with only one exception (John Jowdy).

And that depends on what level you are talking about teaching.  But I think if you want to reach 200 and beyond, you need a coach that's also (or once was) a 200+ bowler.  There's no way that a sub 180 bowler can teach lane transition and lane interpretation to a bowler pushing 200, when they have never done it themselves.  The high average bowlers that are also very good coaches know the hands on game and tricks of the trade in addition to whatever information USBC coaching gives them.

Now if you want to get to the 180 or maybe the 190 range, I still think that a sub 170 average bowler, certified or not, would have a tough job doing that.

I haven't taken the Silver clinic yet, but have some of the coaches on our staff who did tell me that Silver is no picnic. There is much more to it and some of it is teaching from the foul line back. One of our in-house coaches told me that his final grade was very video intensive and he had to give a lesson to the instructor as part of this.

I look forward to taking Silver if I can find one with out time or travel conflicts.

As always, thanks for all of the helpful insight and advice.
I went to the website and found that you can take the level one class online pretty much at your leisure. They have a Bronze level class scheduled in my area next month also.

I will take both classes and post an update regarding my thoughts about the same once completed.
