What can I expect on wood lanes??
« on: August 05, 2003, 09:44:10 PM »
Hello, its me again
I am changein house's for winter leagues. The place I play summer leagues ended last night, and with all the break downs, and automated scoring errors, I had to say....NO MORE!!
The other house in town is small, and still has wood lanes. I am wondering what I can expect my equipment to do in this situation. Is there a type of ball that works better on wood vs. synthetic?

Depends on the condition of the lanes.  If they are in good shape, the backend will not jump as hard as a synthetic when stripped.  However, carry down doesn't seem to affect the ball as much on wood.  That's just from my opinion though.

If the heads are in bad shape, you can expect the ball to grab as soon as you set it down, start to slide around the arrows, and hook again on the backend.  It can be weird.

Also, take a practice slide on the approaches.  Around here the wood houses tend to not slide as much as synthetics, but they will be more consistent week to week since the humidity does not seem to affect them quite as much.

All in all, it will just take getting used to.  I grew up on wood, and it took me a while to adjust to the synthetics.  I assume it may take you a bit to get comfortable with wood as well.  Good Luck!!

I have yet to go visit and check the place out, but last night I was invited to join the winter league there so I figure, it couldnt be much worse then I just finished bowling on. Its my understanding that the lanes were resently resurfaced and covered with some new rockhard finish, so we shall see. I might try and swing in there tonight and look things over.

Well, from my experience synthetics tend to hold the shot alot better, but you hafta watch out for the shot being burned out.  Best advise i was ever given for bowling on synthetics, is " if you think you should move, you should have moved 2 frames ago "  so if you throw a shot and it checks up early, on the next shot move a board or two and keep your break point the same. I bowl in a house on a scratch traveling tournament that uses synthetics, and last yr, i started out playing inside 3rd arrow out to 10, and by the 6th game of the day i was playing just inside 4th arrow out to 10. And this was across 6 different pairs of lanes.  So the change wasnt that great.   Now in Wood, the backends will be softer, but i notice that when the shot goes, you hafta move! I bowl 2 leagues in a house that uses wood lanes, and normally play 15-10.  And can play that shot untill the track burns up, which is normally by second game, because everyone plays the track, which is up 2nd arrow. so i know by the second game that i hafta start moving, and i also watch out for carry down, cuz on wood carry down happens faster, that i notice.  But the easiest thing i would do, is to take some of your weaker stuff, to your first night and practice going up 2nd arrow and see what your balls do.  But u also take in mind the weather too, if its hot out, on wood the oil is going to burn up FAST!

Here's how I like to explain the difference:

Take a few drops of vegetable oil, and put them on your formica or laminate counter top. Spread it around, draw your fingers through it, etc...

Now do the same on your sealed wood floors.

On the wood, the oil will settle in the dimples and chips, and be harder to move around. If there's cracks between the boards, guess where the oil goes??

On the laminate/formica, the oil just sits there. A little gets picked up by your fingers, and it gets moved around, but otherwise, the quantity doesn't really go away.

Part of it is going to depend on what this new rockhard surface is. It might be the new LAneshield. If so, the ball reaction will be the same as synthetic. What part of the country are you from?

I am in southwest utah, 2 hours north of vegas.
If laneshield is some of the newest and hardest stuff, then I bet thats what is on it. I dont recall off hand but I know I was told it is the hardest stuff around at the time (past couple years?)
