The past couple of weeks, I have had several 3 game sets where I've missed hitting the pocket once or twice in 3 games, and gone with 1 or two opens and shot 585-590. That means that I'm shooting a heck of a lot of spares.
10 pins, 4 pins, 7s, 8s, even an occasional 9.
The 10s are ring or weak. The 7s - same thing. This is going on while all around me are tripping 4s, using messengers to carry corners, hitting on "1-2-3 pocket" nose hits, etc, etc.
There I sit - camped out on the solid 1-3 pocket, good for 9 almost all the time - sometimes, of course, leaving the solid 7-10.
I've tried switching balls, switching hand positions, making parallel moves, etc, etc - NOTHING seems to be working for me.
Does ANYONE out there have any suggestions??? (other than to join a no tap league?

Try to keep your armswing loose. My first 4 weeks were 570-595. Hit the pocket a lot, but carry was lousy. Mostly 10's, but enough misc. stuff to make you wonder. I knew my timing was off (common for me), but wasn't sure of the culprit. Forgot everything I learned in NC. Shot 660 Monday night with terrible spare shooting (threw enough 10's and 3-6-10's today to take a chunk out of my Blue Dot). Tried my hardest to push the ball straight out and let it fall. Even if my release suffered, I was determined to keep my armswing looser. Sawbones has posted a few things lately about the pushaway. Good stuff.

Mumzie, I feel your pain. I have been there before and know that place well. When I find myself carrying poorly it due to fact that I am "helping" the ball just as I release it. You know how it goes, you throw a few good shots and leave something. The next thing you know you are "helping or grabbing" the ball. Is it possible that is what you are doing??

I am totally for video taping yourself. I shot a whopping 510 Friday night. After taping myself Sunday I realized I was rushing the shot and not staying with the shot. I shot 621 tonight, not spectacular but a definite improvement.

10 pin-6 back and 1/2 left
4 pin-1/2 left
9 pin-1 left

Bones has covered most of the territory.
When that happens to me, only after thinking about it later at home do I realize that basically there are 2 major possible reasons why this is happening:
1. My timing is off and I am doing a little something wrong on every ball, enough so that I leave a little something different standing on every shot.
Answer: go back to basics, like pushaway or shoulder facing target line.
2. I am using the wrong ball for the condition or am just not recognizinf the condition and am playing the wrong line entirely to get the right carry.
Possible answer: If you're throwing a control ball, pick up something completely different like a ball to open up the lane: X Factor or Inferno. If you throwing a big hooking ball, go to a control ball.

Last night was yet another episode of how many single pins can I shoot at after having a decent first game (8 strikes, 2 splits and a 4 pin). In the next game, I alternated between strike and 4 pin for the most part until late in the game when the adjustment I made for the 4-pins turned into 10-pin city. Game 3 was an exercise in futility where it seemed like nothing worked in terms of helping carry...and the pistol was at home. Anyone know if a Colt is ABC/WIBC sanctioned?

I have another idea. Check your shoes and slide. You may not be getting a firm base with your push off shoe and may be sliding slightly too far. Parker Bohn makes a big deal about having the right surface on his shoe -- frankly, it makes a one or two revolution difference to be stable at the line and to have a good push from the next to last step. If you are, as I suspect because I just noticed the same thing was happening to me, sliding inconsistently, rough up the heel and slide less. You'll plant slightly more and if you can keep your mechanics the same, should carry more.

By the by, until I started looking at my shoes, my carry percentage had dropped from the mid sixties to the mid fourties. That's a huge difference in pin count.

Michelle,I've got a Colt Trooper III in .357 Mag you can borrow! No carry for me usually is the result of shortening my slide in some fashion, changing the ball release timing. Got to get the slide foot out long!!

don't need to borrow it...I've got a Z-40 that was the product of the joint venture with CZ (and I didn't find out until after I had bought it and fired it more than once) that there were something like 800 imported into the US (mine has a serial number in the low 200's)...but it would get the job done on those pesky single pins

About the only thing I didn't try last night was getting something from the car and coming back in to loft the caps. Down the twig wasn't working, inside wasn't working, and unfortunately, in a league environment, I couldn't expect a rotation to the next pair...adding to the frustration was the fact we were spotting close to 200 pins (4-person teams).

Maybe next week I will try the adjustment of a few more shots of Crown or Titos

Michelle, I have a CZ100 9MM. It is a great piece!
Lots of good features and VERY accurate. Only thing I don't like about it is the DAO. Other than that it is tough and like I said very accurate.

Well, I did a little of everything tonight. Shot 174 with a missed 7 and 10, 2 strikes. Missed the hole a couple of times 'cause I was experimenting. Changed balls the 8th frame of the last game, went 10,10,X,10 171
Next game X 8 10 X 10 10 (2-8) 10 X 10 X 185
During this time I was moving up, moving back, checking my shoe, checking my slide, making sure I didn't lock my elbow, and all that other stuff. I should note that of all the 10 pins (8 of em in 13 frames...) but one were absolutely SOLID ring 10s. One was weak. My practice partner kept suggesting to get more aggressive with hand position.
Finally, the last game, I went the opposite way, and went less aggressive with the hand position. Started out with three in a row (first double...), stone 8, X, 10 pin, X, split, 4 pin, 6-10 spare, X. 214...
In 23 frames, missed the pocket twice. Carried 11. Wow. Almost hit 50%!!!

I find that sometimes a little extra ball speed coupled with a line change helps.. That's about the last thing that I can think of, after reading everything else mentioned. There's only one house that I bowl at in the area that opening up helps carry the 10, but that's because the side boards are dead as a doornail. Every other place that I bowl, the solution for me has been more speed, less hook.
