What Is Bowling
« on: January 06, 2008, 10:27:12 PM »
Before I would truly say it was a sport but now I am starting to think different because nobody want to just bowl to see who is the better man and money has to always be involved...

Starting to think its of a gambling sport than anything else but again than is just my thoughts on this subject

Isn't there gambling in all sports?

Yes - that is true but it seems that this sport is based on that concept more than anything else...

Yes there is gambling in other sports, but those sports are not trying to establish themselves as a sport. While those who bowl will say that it is a sport, those who do not will argue that it is not a sport.

The biggest thing that I hear is that "there is no defense in bowling", so it is not a sport. So I ask "if Golf is a sport" and usually they say "yes". But there is no defense in golf, so why is that a sport and bowling is not? That is when the person that I am talking to starts to turn the conversation personal. Usually when that happens, I know that they will never understand and I just smile.

THS bowling is a game.
Sport/PBA bowling is a sport.
Gambling has little to do with it.

As the old saying goes, the best defense is a good offense.

To those that doubt this, I would ask if they think Track and Field, Swimming, Gymnastics, just to mention a few, are considered sports or not (we know how they would answer, since it is universally agreed).

I've bowled on some "typical" house shots that were brutal to hit (way too much over under), and I've bowled on some sport and PBA pattern shots that were easier than the THS I just mentioned.

With so many variables involved, laying down a shot doesn't necessarily end up with an intended reaction, no matter what they may be called.

Actually there is defense in golf. If your 2 strokes up going into the last hole you'll play it alot different than if your 1 stroke down. And now that I'm thinking about it there is a little defense in bowling. Say going to a urethane ball that you know won't have the strike capability of a resin ball but also won't be leaving you with designer splits when the alleys get tough. BTW golf is just as bad if not worse than bowling for gambling. What really matters are the amounts of money involved.
