What is the strongest or best ball at 13 lbs
« on: December 29, 2004, 02:43:35 AM »
I'm looking to go down to 13 lbs (old age/injury) and would like to know which company carries high end balls in the lower weight limits.  I also would like to equip my wife with one.

A lot depends on several factors.  If you could tell us about the conditions you bowl on synthetic versus wood.  Oil patterns as well as your own specs we could give you a better idea what would work.  Ball speed, rev rate, axis tilt and rotation and where you like to play on the lane.

It is always best to get the right eqipment that best suits your game and the lane conditions.

Doc

I have a 14lb flashpoint and a 15lb trauma recovery.  Both are drilled to go long.  I bowl on synthetics with a fair amount of oil early and screaming back ends.  This house is not necessarily THS because only one bowler is over 210.  I can crank the ball with 17-20 mph or can throw a control shot down and in 15-17 mph.  I don't know any of my particulars on the drilling other than it goes long.  Thanks for the reply

A few buzzsaws are made in 13# I know the Uranium and Uranium Solid are but you can check their website for the rest because they are not all made in 13#.  But they use exact same core as in heavier balls and since they hit the hardest anyway you can't go wrong.( I am not trying to start a buzzsaw basfest here people so please. )  I would suggest the Uranium Pearl it is very versatile.

I agree with JPR. Lane #1 makes the best lighter weight balls, as their 14 lb. balls have the exact same size and weight core as their 16 lb. balls, except for their Uranium Buzzsaws, because the core is so dense.

Lane #1 was the 1st company to use the same size and weight cores in their lighter weight stuff. I believe they take 1 lb. out of the core of their 14 lb. balls to make 13 lbs.

You're getting maximum core weight/density in the lighter balls, which means they will hit harder. The other companies are tuning into this concept, and are catching on. But, you can't beat the power of a Buzzsaw, especially in the lighter weights. =:^D

Brunswick has 13# balls. I know their cores are designed to make a 13# as strong as a 16#, a 14# as strong as a 16#, a 15# as strong as a 16#, etc. etc.
I'm pretty sure that Storm does the same thing. In fact this morning in league bowling, I threw 15# Storm balls the first 2 games (168 & 155) and switched to a 14# Storm ball in the 3rd game and had excellent carry with the 14# (214), so I would guess you would get good results with a 13# from Brunswick or Storm either one. I can't speak for the other companies as I know very little about them.

I don't know what weight you are throwing right now, but I wouldn't advise dropping more than 1# at a time.

I think it was Brunswick and not Lane 1 to be the first company to do this. However Lane 1 has some good balls, but their design is not for everyone. They work well for some people and not for others. They didn't work as well for me as Storm and Brunswick does. If you choose Lane 1, be prepared to pay a lot more money for that Lane 1 ball. ($40-$60 depending which ball you choose)

I use 13# equipment exclusively and have been wondering the following:

In the balls which are using a dynamic core I understand that the weight is taken out of the core.  Therefore, would it make more sense to choose a ball that is more center heavy  to begin with (low RG) as opposed to cover heavy (high RG)?  Would it make a difference?  Also, what about symmetrical vs. asymmetrical.  Which would give the best bang for the buck in the 13# weight?

Hammer, Storm, Brunswick all make dynamic cores in their 13# equipment.

the only one from hammer ive looked at is the deal goes down to 12# but at that weight it uses a core that seems to be the diesel core and not the AON(sp) core

LadyW,

Yeas ago manufacturers used to show the cores used in their various weight balls. I don't see them in their catalogues anymore.

I remember  pancake for balls up the 13 lbs and a proper core for 14 to 16 lbs.

What you're talking about is the ball's RG. Centre heavy, low RG. Shell heavy, high RG.
So if your 13 lbs have only a pancake as a weight block, it'll always be shell heavy. High RG.

Storm's master line (X-Factor) has dynamic cores at 13# and I think the power/charge line does also but I am not positive.

One thing to remember though is that core dynamics and drill pattern only equate to about 15% of the total reaction. Lane conditions, bowler style, the balls surface and composition make up the other 85%.

Even a pancake cored ball can perform well if the surface texture and composition match up well with the condition for given bowler's style.

The quantum line was the first that I know of that began to really make dynamic cores that rolled similarly to the heavier weight balls.  That is to closely match the rg values.

In designing lighter weight balls sometimes the cores are made of different shapes and of course the filler is what makes the greatest difference.

I believe that Brunswick still has the largest line of 13 lb balls with dynamic weight blocks.  Sometimes storms 13lb have modified cores which are different.  usually a pancake with an added puck to help improve flip.

Looking at your profile you have an average that is very good.  I don't know what your injury is but I am sure if you work with someone that specializes in sports rehab you may be able to stay up with the 14-15 lb range.  Dropping to 13 lb really limits the possibility of picking out balls with pin placements and topweights.

baiki-

Since I only use 13# balls I have done a lot of research.  I already know which 13# balls use the same dynamic core designs as the heavier ones.  My question refers to those with dynamic cores only.
