A Benchmark ball for me will give me a good read on various lane conditions; with a normal natural release will give a proper input of what the lane scoring conditions have to offer. Balancing the Yin and the Yang. By that definition, and my game, a medium RG; with a touch of reactive cover results in medium flare , and a ball that reads midlane with roll expectation and is NOT flip based oriented on the backend; an honest ball reaction. By nature hooks a bit earlier (drilled to do so) and more arcy throughout its move to the pocket.
With several shots I will be able to determine the amount of oil on heads, midlane oil or dry, and backend strength. We are talking reading the lane.
If it works fine, in most cases it will be adequate to score; or small changes in releases, speed, loft. If not, to the bag.
