What would you call a house that...
« on: March 23, 2005, 04:16:36 AM »
What would you call a house that had the following conditions?

I bowled at a bowling alley a couple days ago where the first
15 feet of the lane where some sort of linolium synthetic and the
rest of the lane was wood. You could see the oil pattern on the
lanes, it was dry down the middle and puddled towards the gutters.
You could actually see droplets of oil on the synthetic portion of the
lane.

I happpened to be bowling the games about an hour and a half before
a league, so they trundled out the oiling machine and proceeded to oil
the lanes, but continued to let people bowl on them afterward before the
league started.  After the machine ran down the lane I was on, the dry
middle vanished and the lane edges became even more drenched in oil.

Usually, when I encounter what I say is an heavy oil lane, I toss my ball
down and can clearly see the oil track on the ball. After one toss down
the newly oiled lane, the entire ball came back to the ball return wet
with oil. When I picked up the ball it nearly slid out of my hands. My hands
were wet with oil. I've never seen so much oil except when it is still in
the bottle.

I watched some of the league bowlers warming up before leaving. The entire
house was full of super crankers, a lot of two fingered bowlers whipping the
hell out of their balls to get them to hook. I watch one lefty in particular
with a lane#1 hybrid dirty bomb use two fingers and no thumb whirl the cover
off the ball and barely get a hook back towards the pocket.

What was interesting was, the guy doing the oiling was really serious about
it. He used a measuring kit and tested about every other 5th lane, marked
in the oil pattern where it ended down the lane, etc..... what gives?

Anyway, I feel like I should give my ball swimming lessons before I bowl
there again, when and if I do.

Thats called a reverse block, or "out of bounds" (also called an OB). And as for the lanes, they're just half wood half synthetic. I've bowled on them before.

Also sometimes referred to as HELL. I hate bowling on reverse blocks.

Dr. Joe, if you want a laugh go to the PBA website.  Check in the Miscellaneous forum (in the Message Boards)for a topic titled "String Theory."  Please, if you're so inclined, attempt to give those folks some basic lessons in cosmology.  In particular a guy named Norm needs your help.
