what would you do if...
« on: October 15, 2003, 10:44:59 PM »
You walked into the house to bowl in your expensive scratch league, and found 14 little kids (5 and UNDER) on your pair, with bumpers, bowling on your fresh shot???

This is what happened to us last night. Talk about the shot being unpredictable!!!

I think this was pretty irresponsible of the house. The funny part was that the other end of the house was full of the school bus driver's league. If the kids had been down next to them, they'd probably never even noticed!!

Next time (if there is one...) I'll simply let the house know we'll post bowl. I'll ask the league to vote on whether this constitutes an emergency or not.

Wow.  Another example of owners/management not having a clue.  What would it take, an inconvenience of 5 minutes to run the machine again on your pair?  Or even better, just put them on the other end and the issue is never a concern.

Mumzie -  welcome to my world.  The lanes that we bowl on always like that.  every pair.  They oil in the afternoon and then let open play bowling occur and then they let a league bowl and then we bowl.

No wonder it seems we appear to be sandbaggers when we go to tournaments and bowl so well.  We get a fresh condition.

You and your league have the lanes during your bowling time.  The rest of the time they belong to the center.  If it is not written in your contract you have no beef.  Sorry, thats the way it is.

I kinda expected the play 'em as they lie response. And in truth, I kinda agree. BUT - (whine on) when honor scores(300) and near honor scores (782,791) are all around us, and a 640 is high on our pair, something ain't right.
I don't really care if the shot is bad or good - as long as it's reasonably the same from pair to pair.

I know we all have the option of not participating, but there are also brackets and high game pots to consider.

And - in regard to open play - one house I bowl in allows NO open play on the scratch league lanes after the oil is laid down. The league made it a condition.

And - regular open play, although not the greatest thing for the shot, is a far cry different than 4 year olds with bumpers.

duda -
my night was one of the better outings on the pair. If you read my post again, I didn't say that.

Oh -yeah - I should have also added that if the kids had been down by the other, earlier league, no other league bowlers would have followed them - only open play. Then no one would have been upset...

I guess it's about respect...
There is a house here in town that does not care about it's league bowlers. They will squeeze all the open play they can out of the house - and don't care that the league bowlers are wading through frosting, pizza, and popcorn, as long as they get the money from the parties. This house is losing bowlers right and left, as they abandon the league bowler. In fact, a lot of these bowlers are moving to the other house in town - the one that I bowl in...

The house I'm talking about normally does not follow in this mold. Usually, at least on Wednesdays, our scratch league is the biggest presence in the house. At least from 7 -9 PM. Not only do we have 20 teams of bowlers (out of 32 lanes), but at least as many spectators. Most of the bowlers and spectators buy something from the snack bar, bar, or both. Most of us have stuck with this house through a serious equipment decline over the last 2 years, and are now trying to support the new owner through a seemingly endless, chaotic remodel. (went 3 weeks with one toilet for the whole place, last night had no overhead displays for the scorers, etc...). Seems to me that the loyalty of this group of people would have been worth more than one birthday party, but then I know I'm not the business manager.

You DO have an argument about the shot not being consistent with the rest of the league.  However, I argued with people a lot who always dogged youths because they have an "easy shot."  Um, no, our scratch league was second shift on Saturday mornings against these same little bumper bowling kids.  The adults had a MUCH better shot and still had the nerve to say we were all no talent youth bowlers.  At least you get to drag the team on your pair down with you.  HOWEVER again, the price of the league should be more than enough to deserve that conditions are at the very least consistent and fair, if they're still not pristine.  I say there's enough of a reason for you to mention something.  I'm in two high priced scratch leagues, and believe me, I WANT my money's worth, and I know I deserve it.
