229 for me. A friend of mine shot his first 300 with a polyester.

I don't hook it that much anyhow, and I have only seen lanes dry enough to require plastic once when they stripped the lanes and then screwed up and only oiled the heads.  Thankfully they re-oiled the lanes when we complained this wasn't very fair when everyone else got a normal shot, and they agreed.  Otherwise I can just move left and swing my regular equipment.  The ONLY times lately I've used my plastic ball on the first shot were two or three frames when I was working on my thumbhole on my other ball trying to get stubborn tape out of it.

Let's see... back in 1991, maybe 92, my spare ball was a Pink Hammer.  Went to KS State tournament and shot 675 in doubles (my highest ever at the time), and 620-something in singles off of a 158 or 160 avg. (I was used to flat oil applied with a bug sprayer, and this was my first success on a "THS" style pattern laid down by a machine - it was also one of my first tournaments.  I think we placed 13th in doubles and I placed 7th in the under 180 division).
Sorry for the small figjam.  If it makes you feel better, I've not done **** in a tourney since, outside of breaking even.

More recently, I've had a Scout Urethane spare ball that I've shot 279's, a 280 and 700's with.  Also, the XXXL from Lane 1 has been a great go-to ball for me. Also a couple of 279's with it, and a couple of 700+ when using it on it's own.  All 3 of those balls have also come out in game 3 and "saved" a 700 series at least once.

Shot a 269 on flat oil applied by bug sprayer with my Dad's old 16lb. hardrubber AMF Dick Weber 5-Star.

Here's my story - was out of town for Christmas this past year, and we didn't have room to bring bowling balls (this will not happen again), and we decided to go bowling.  I bowled with a house shoe on my left and a sneaker on my right because I almost fell on my face with the house shoe on my right foot.  Used a 16 pound houseball, conventional grip, and shot 223 first game.  I threw one more game at about a 180 and decided to go bowl duckpin.  Didn't do to well doing that but had fun anyway.  

That taught a lesson that we often forget, sometimes you need to just have fun.
