Which is more important? The core or the coverstock?
« on: September 25, 2005, 04:07:55 PM »
Which one is more important to make the ball hook?
The core? Or the coverstock?
Actually I'm not very sure about the detailed function of the core.

Thanks!

Coverstock is the thing directly making contact to the lane. Coverstock is most important, followed by core characteristics, drilling, and so on.

Core and layout of the ball controls the ball's motion, and the coverstock and cover prep controls the amount of hook.  They are both very important, but the most important thing is matching the core/cover combo that will best suit your game, as well as finding a layout/surface prep that also matches up.

The porosity of the coverstock is the main attribute to creating hook. A ball can be 100 hardness and be very porous and still hook of the wall. Hardness is meaningless in a sense.

Thanks for all the replies!

Does it mean that the core contributes to the "skid/flip" properties of the ball but the coverstock determines the amount of the "skid/flip"?

Does wearing alter the properties of the coverstock? (Even after getting rid of all the oil stuck to it)

I thought the coverstock does the skidding, while the core flips.

If the porosity determines the amount of friction created, what do sanding and pearlizing do to alter the amount of hook?
Thanks again!

Sanding opens up the pors while perlizing or polisheing makes them smaller or closes them up slightly.
