Started my PBA pattern league Monday
« on: May 12, 2009, 03:49:14 AM »
We started with the Viper pattern.  I gotta say, I don't know what's wrong with me. The suggestions to play this pattern is first arrow or from 4-8. I tried playing up 5-8 but was having very little success.  So I decide to play 11 and swing a little... couldn't play that either.

Before and after going to Nationals, I was maybe a board from my mark at the arrows. So I was fairly accurate there. My break point was what i needed a little more work on.

Well all the sudden in this league on this pattern I can't seem to hit my mark at the arrows.  Then if I do, I throw the ball different. One time with a little too much hook, the next flatter. I drift left, hit my mark it goes out further and I hit more oil. I drift right, hit my mark and it takes off through the nose or way brooklyn... its so frustrating.

I know it was very playable.  Guys next to us are there to "win" the league. They were all working together to break the lane down.  They played the lanes as suggested.  All going up the five board and they were killing it.  They were all well over 210 pace.  Last game looked like they were doing even better.  Each guy had a string of at least 4 strikes, heck all i saw were strikes.

Anyway, watching these guys play that line i decided to switch balls.  I threw a few good shots.  Definitely had more room, but I reverted back to missing my mark, drifting, too much hook, not enough...
I don't know what to do to correct this and where do i start?
Well I know my wrist needs to stay in a constant position to give me the same release...(wrist brace?) If been working out with weights for several months and have actually strengthened my wrists.  It wasn't this bad before so I'm kinda lost???

Did I let the name(PBA Pattern) psych me out? My focus was definitely not there. It's like before I released the ball, I lost my mark and really didn't know if I hit my mark.

What about this drifting issue I have going on?  How do I fix that?  One time I drift too much right, the next to much left.  Maybe this "drifting" wasn't so noticeable on THS conditions and it is now magnified because of tighter lanes???

We bowl Viper pattern again this coming Monday.  I don't want to go in and shoot another 485 or worse.

On the positive side, I won my point and ended up getting a point for winning my series(yeah sad I won with a 485) and we won that last game by 1 pin.

For me the Viper plays much different than nationals. It sounds to me like you are not in your comfort zone when you play out around 5. It is tough when you are having trouble repeating shots, but try to find where you get the best look on your good shots, then work on your mechanics.

Thanks Bob I will.  Any you're right, I'm out of my comfort zone playing up five board.  But to better myself, I have to learn to play different parts of the lane.

Oh and I did something I haven't done in probably 15-20 years.  That's to dump one in the channel on a three bagger.  Yeah, I did have a three bagger in one game.  I also had 3 splits in that game.

I average higher on Viper than I do THS, seriously. Unfortunately it's by far the only one of the PBA shots I can say that about.

I've only bowled on it on AnviLane. Every time I've bowled on it, the dominant shot for me has been straight up 10 to start -- basically, the track area. No swing at all.

For me, it's definitely about breakpoint depth control on that pattern (although that goes for all the PBAX patterns, really). If you can control the distance downlane of where you're wanting the ball to break, you actually have a little bit of lateral area on that pattern.

Adjustments for me were to just start moving left with my feet, but keep my same marks downlane.

My preference is to play front to back rather than left to right, anyway. Viper makes me go more direct, and that's probably why I score well on it. No accident that Scorpion is my second-favorite pattern because I have to start it out direct, too.
