which of the new balls would fit............
« on: June 07, 2010, 08:24:30 AM »
im looking for a new ball that will go long and snap on true medium conditions or maybe even heavy medium oil.
i bought the hammer burn a little while ago and for me it was useless for what i wanted, which is what is described above. i got it drilled up dual angle - 60 x 3 x 30 and at oob it was too over under and it was never able to handle much oil, just skidded so i hit with just 2000 no polish and although it reads the lane much better now and is nowhere near as over under it still doesnt handle the oil particularly well and i have to play a relatively down the line shot eg from standing 20 and throwin over bout 12/13 at the arrows.
so im looking for a ball that will do what i wanted the burn to do, im open to all brands except ebonite which is a no no.
seeing as i havent had a newly released ball in a long time, (i think my black widow was the last ball i bought when first released) i thought i would go with one of the new ones out.
with the new ball im hoping to be able play more of a swingin shot.
although my stats are in my signature i put them here as well:
rev rate: 350
ball speed at pins: 15-16mph

thanks for any reply's i get

From what I've seen, the Fast should give you that kind of shape. I'm getting one this weekend, will let you know.

Storm Invasion.  Although I didn't expect a snap from this ball, it's exactly what I got.  It's the first ball I grab when I'm playing an inside line and it turns the corner surprisingly hard.  I know others on this site have panned the Invasion, but I really love this ball.

Had probably about a game and a half with my Fast last night, definitely seems to be the ball you're after, I had mine drilled 20° to the VAL, 5" pin-PAP, about 40-50° drill angle.

It put the pin about 1" above my ring finger (above the top of it, I mean). Good length, and a really defined breakpoint, and I found it pretty strong. It would definitely be out-gunned on heavy, but should allow me to stand a little further left on medium/medium-wet and give me a good crisp turn.

Granted it's not "new" but is certainly a very good ball, and a good price point too. You might be able to find a good deal on it.

I would go with either a Midnight Vibe, Reign, or Dark Star.  Best bet I think would be the Midnight Vibe, but it also depends on the drilling.  Keep that in mind as well.  Cheers.

Surprised the suggestions being a little lower end, especially since he is asking for medium to heavier mediums.  IMO.....a higher performance ball still designed for length and angularity would do the trick here.  My suggestion is the Track 920A.  Read up on it on this site.  Designed for exactly what you are looking for skid/snap on oilier lanes.  Another thing is layout.  Dont do a 3 inch pin to PAP drilling.  Do you know what your axis point is?

Me too, Steve.
If his Burn wasn't enough, how could a Fast or a Midnight Vibe or a Dark Star be enough?

920A is a good choice as is a BreakOut, a Jigsaw Corner, a Virtual Gravity and an Aftermath, with the right drilling and surface.

Well, the OP asked for something that will "go long and snap on true mediums" so I suppose it depends on what your understanding of medium is (I'll admit I don't know much about the Hammer Burn). However, the OP also complains of the Burn being too over/under, which is kind of what you get when you take a pearl ball and layout for an angular reaction.

For the same kind of shape on mre oil, I'm going to be getting a black widow sting, which might be a good option, if you liked the original.

But also look at the layout in his burn.  A 3 inch distance with the pin is going to get the ball rolling fast.  As soon as it encounters friction, it hooks and if you get into heavier oil inside, it rolls so fast there is no backend reaction.  He needs more cover to handle the oil inside (he stated he wanted to play inside and swing), but need the length layout so the ball doesnt hook at his feet if he misses outside too quickly.  I do see what you are saying though.

My thought, is that he can take that 920A, put the pin above the fingers, weight hole in P2 position and keep the surface at 2000 or 4000, it will blend in the pattern nicely for what part of the lane he wants to play.
