Which would you take to a tournament?
« on: May 27, 2009, 08:03:00 PM »
I have a lot of balls, a lot more than I need. I take 6 balls to tournaments. Could be house shots, could be sport shots. Here is what I have, or that is on the way:

Resurgence - 4 1/2" pin to PAP, pin over bridge
Special Agent - 4" pin to PAP, pin under ring
Virtual Gravity - 4 1/4" pin to PAP, pin over ring. MB 4 1/2" from PAP.
Strike Zone - 3 1/2" pin to PAP, pin next to ring. MB 4 1/2" from PAP.
Second Dimension - 5" pin to PAP, pin under middle.
T-Road Pearl - RICO
Hy-Road - 4 1/4" pin to PAP, pin over ring.
Creature - 4 1/2" pin to PAP, pin over bridge.
Spit Fire - RICO
Break Point - 3 1/2" pin to PAP, pin next to ring. MB 5" from PAP.
Maniac - 4 1/2" pin to PAP, pin under bridge.
S75 - 5 1/4" pin to PAP, pin under ring, a little left. MB 5" from PAP.
Link - 4" from PAP, pin under ring. MB 4 1/2" from PAP.
Slate Blue Gargoyle - 4 1/2" pin to PAP, pin above bridge.

I know that's a crazy list, I just like to try new things. Which would you take to a tournament? The Slate Blue has to be one of the 6. It's my fried lane ball and my 10 pin ball. Thanks.

What I'd take is this

Resurgence/Special Agent(your preference/favorite)
Second Dimension
Hy-Road
Spit Fire
Link
Slate Blue Gargoyle

That's a pretty well-rounded arsenal in my opinion.  It's probably safe to say you'd be ready for anything in terms of equipment.  Only because of what I'm most likely to see in my area, I'd personally see myself switching the 2D for the Creature for a different look in the Hy-Road/Spit Fire area, since tournaments around here typically are on the drier side more often than not.  Not saying the Creature is weak but I think it's smooth and controllable.  If you also don't see a lot of oil most of the time, I'd suggest you make this switch.

Resurgence/Special Agent/Virtual Gravity/Strike Zone/S75/Break Point for the wet
Hy-Road
Creature
Slate Blue Gargoyle

That leaves you two free slots.  I'd take a lane opener like the 2nd Dimension or Maniac for one, then either a favorite, or a secondary ball that covers the most expected lane condition, but gives you a different look.

Which pieces of equipment do you feel most comfortable with in terms of KNOWING reactions and relationships to the other equipment?

Do you see better results with certain equipment on wood compared to synthetics? It makes a difference in what you carry to those houses...

The key to having multiple balls is to ensure that they don't duplicate each other in terms of reaction and you also MUST be able to pull a different one out of the bag and have a clue about what to expect from the first shot you make with it in competition.  If you piss away two or three frames trying to get dialed in, you may have given the event away...

Also ensure that you have at least one mild piece with you in addition to a spare ball.

Agree with Michelle.  Don't have duplication.  We don't know the surfaces of these balls either.  Hopefully they are not all shiny, or you have Abralon in your bag.

Also, for me, what do you drive?  "I" would take them all.  I have a Tundra with a shell on the bed, I took 20 balls to many tournaments.  SOMETIMES you see that condition that your normal balls don't work on, AND you have that ball that stinks at home but works well on that tough condition.

Just for grins:
Virtual gravity
Special Agent
Second Dimension
Creature
T Road Pearl
