White tape in back of thumbhole
« on: August 09, 2007, 03:10:03 AM »
More and more, when I see pictures that bowlers post of their equipment, I see white tape in the back of the thumbhole. Is this the trend nowadays? Does this help your release somewhat? I am thinking about trying this, but I won't be bowling for a few months (recent shoulder surgery). Who shouldn't use this taping technique? Also, does anybody use tape on their thumb while having the white tape in the back, or do they use just the bare thumb?

Personally, the white tape I have seen is textured, and a bit rough on the backside of the thumb.  If using white, I prefer it on the front of the thumbhole.  Black tape is ok on the back, since it is generally smoother and untextured.  But like I said, that's just my preference.  It all depends on what feel you like and what gives you the grip you need without causing any hang ups or dropped balls.

Agreed. All I can think about with white in the back is blisters

I use a piece of 1" white in the front and back of my thumbhole. Along with this, I put a couple of pieces of Brunswick protective tape on my thumb. The tape on my thumb helps avoid blistering, now that my drilling is spot on.

If you grip the ball excessively, or have the wrong thumb pitches, then white in the back will cause you a lot of problems (not insurmountable ones, but still). However, now that I've fully adjusted I couldn't go back, the tape provides extra friction, meaning I barely have to hold the ball at all, and can bowl all day with no blistering...

It's not for everyone, but with a little patience, it can work, and work well...

Done white at the back for 10-11 yrs now. Tried tape on the side for a bit but made it hang up with my oval looking thumb. Black tape is awaful for me, have a few bits but will use it as a bottom piece for when 1 white isnt enough and 2 is too many

Well, I use white tape only - under the thumb for consistent grip and minor adjustments, but also to tighten up the thumb hole overall normally 1-2 tapes under and 1-2 tapes to make the hole feel snug (my balls are drilled with some good extra space for summer time swelling).

But I do not put the pieces of tape directly in the back of the hole, where it would rub and hurt after a while. I put it rather in an 8 o'clock position (righty). At this place, I just ahev contact with it when I have the thumb fully inserted - but it is risk-free (for me) when the thumb starts exiting.

I guess that my hole still is too big, so that I grip too hard on my equipment, so that I'll start experiments with extra side tape during the summer just to see how tight I can make the thumb hole and if it helps withz a more relaxed (and early) release. I suspect some more personal potential in this area.

It's possible you're seeing Magic Carpets.

I use white in the back to fill up the space needed and then a piece of black over that. I like the feel of smooth urethane slugs on the front so I rarely put anything there.

I have been following the advice of Ron C, and now that I have 1/2 forward in the thumb, I can pack that white tape in the back of the hole until it is tight. Of course this would not be possible with reverse in the thumb, because I would have to squeeze the ball, and I would blister.

I can stand with the ball at my side and the ball will not drop off my hand while relaxed with no grip pressure. Throwing the ball is the only thing that allows the thumb to exit, and it now exits clean and consistently.

I used to use the Magic Carpet while I was making my adjustments with thumb pitch. Now that I am comfortable with the forward pitch, I have found I no longer need the carpets, and just use white tape to adjust.

Thats why I use ebonites black tape, its really thick.

I bought some and tried it a year ago. I would put a piece of this tape in thumb hole and throw the ball and the ball would come back minus the tape every time. Worse tape I ever bought.
