White tape in back of thumbhole
« on: August 09, 2007, 03:10:03 AM »
More and more, when I see pictures that bowlers post of their equipment, I see white tape in the back of the thumbhole. Is this the trend nowadays? Does this help your release somewhat? I am thinking about trying this, but I won't be bowling for a few months (recent shoulder surgery). Who shouldn't use this taping technique? Also, does anybody use tape on their thumb while having the white tape in the back, or do they use just the bare thumb?

For what it's worth, I used to experiment with all kinds of different tape configurations and never could get anything comfortable.  A couple weeks ago I switched to the softer Hada tape that goes on your thumb, and my release has never been cleaner.  My accuracy AND revs have both gone up.

Personally, the white tape I have seen is textured, and a bit rough on the backside of the thumb.  If using white, I prefer it on the front of the thumbhole.  Black tape is ok on the back, since it is generally smoother and untextured.  But like I said, that's just my preference.  It all depends on what feel you like and what gives you the grip you need without causing any hang ups or dropped balls.

I use white tape on the back and the vise blue hada tape, you will still get out very clean and the tape on the back does not change the span any.

Red hada is good also, but the blue is better at sticking the whole night on my thumb.

Personally I utilize a 1/2" piece of white tape at the front of my thumb (for feel) and the rest of that tape goes in the back of my thumb.  I mainly utilize white tape in the back, but if I need to snug up the thumb just a little bit I also utilize neon tape.  The neon tape is ~half as thick as the white tape and it's surface texture is less rough.  I've almost always utilized tape in the back of hole to adjust fit as putting the tape in the front will ultimately change the span of the ball if you add too much.

I think it's a personal thing though and everyone does it differently.

I like white tape.  The black tape always used to leave some residue in my thumb hole.  But, like everyone has stated, its all personal preference.  I have never tried the neon.

I've had the white tape leave really sticky residue too.  Seems to happen when I leave a piece in for a while - usually over winter when my hands don't swell as much.

I use both black & white tape in the back of my thumb hole.  I start with however many pieces of 3/4" white to give me the snug fit, then I'll cover that with one piece of thin 1" black tape to maintain the smooth texture.

I've just started experimenting with this configuration and it's worked wonders for me.  Part of your thumbnail might turn black due to it rubbing on the black piece during release.  It's not the sticky tape reside, just the color rubbing off on your nail.  But that's nothing a simple hand wash will take care of.

Why not use both?  Give it a try.

To remove that sticky tape residue, use some Goo Gone on a paper towel and rub briskly.  It might take a minute or so of rubbing.  Then remove the Goo Gone with rubbing alcohol and dry.  --  JohnP

I have the blue Hada. I will try that with the white tape. Had anybody tried using the white tape in the back without tape on the thumb itself, and if you do, do you have any trouble with friction from the tape? Or does the friction help you relax your thumb more?

I use multiple pieces of the white tape in the back of my thumb hole.  I usally cut the 3/4 in half and use that.  I have had no issues with the texture on the back of my thumb.

I put white tape in the back of my thumb hole in a 4 o'clock position (not dirctly behind) as well as under the thumb pad. The latter is for slight span adjustments through swelling, while the back piece is just for tighteneing the hole overall a bit for a snug grip, since my driller already put some extra room into the holes when the balls were originally set up. Just makes for a tighter feeling when I put the thumb into the hole, as far as I can tell I do not touch this area at all upon release, so there's no adhesion problem.

I prefer Slick Tape on the back ... it has a silicone feel to it and while adding a snugger fit, still gives a clean release.

JohnP,
Never heard of using Goo Gone....

Thank you. I'm pulling white adhesive tape out of a dozen balls...
It's a gooey mess.

Why would someone use adhesive tape...besides the cost?
