White Tape in Thumb Hole....
« on: February 26, 2008, 03:15:28 AM »
I have always used the white tap in my thumb, but always placed it under my thumb since I seemed to grip the ball better when I had a longer span.. Now that I have a shorter span.. seems that I haven't been too consistent on my release.. I know most bowlers place the tape on top of their thumb.. Is that the desired placement..
I also thinking of using the tape that you actually place on the thumb to tighten the thumb and cleaner release...

Thought?

I've done it with the urethane nubby type and have wrapped the pad on the tip with the higher friction types. It couldn't hurt unless you use the slick tape

My .02 cents:
I believe placing white tape in the front lends itself to squeezing the ball - something you should try and learn not to do. Placing white tape in the back of the ball is typically too rough for how sensitive the skin is here. I always recommend using either white tape on the side of the thumb hole (if the hole needs to be greatly reduced in size) or black tape in the back, if size reduction needed is minimal. A perfectly sized thumb hole will allow the ball to remain on your hand until release, with relaxed grip pressure througout the swing.
Hope this was helpful.

White in the front, black in the back. I never have a problem squeezing.
Squeezing is the result of bad timing and misfit equipment. I place my white tape on the meaty part of the thumb. Years and years ago, bowling this month had an excellent article on the art of taping your thumbhole. If someone remembers that issue, it would be a good reference.

I've been using white tape for 20 years. I only use the tape on the sides, mostly the left side. I have NEVER had a blister on the soft side of my thumb.
The sides are much more able to callous inresponse to friction.

It's all a matter of personal preference. There are as many ways to tape as there are bowlers

Personally, I use white tape front and back, and I have any new ball opened up enough so that I need the tape. The surface of the thumb insert feels very slippery on my thumb.

I've tried the black tape and besides the fact that it feels like the ball is coming off in my backswing, it always seems to leave gunk in the thumbhole when you want to change it.

Whatever works for you is what's best.

I use white tape both under the fingers and at the side of the thumb hole.
I place 1-2 "staged" pieces of tape under my thumb to form a kind of ramp, so that I do not have to bend the thumb for a good hold. Additionally, the intention is to make the thumb hole tighter, since my thumb holes are drilled with some room, should the thumb swell in summertime.

Additionally, I put 1 piece of tape at the right side of the thumb hole (I am a righty), in about 4 o'clock. This is also meant to make the thumb hole more snug, and I found this position to be the least irritating when I release the ball - in this place, the rough tape does not rub, it just has skin contact when I hold the ball. I'd never put it in the back of the thumb, since it would rub there and also hamper my release.

Tricky. Took some experimenting and trial to work it out for my hand, but the result is very good, much better than the "pure" hole.

What ever works best for you. When I put tape in I put one piece of black and then white over that. That is on both sides of the thumb.
