White tape too tacky?
« on: April 16, 2014, 02:24:03 PM »
I've always used Master White tape because it wasn't as tacky as Ebonite white tape. I ordered a new pack and it is just as tacky as the ebonite if not worse. My thumb swells and shrinks sometimes 8 pieces of tape sometimes none.

Have any of you had this problem? I'm screwed. And yes I've been wiki fitted and been fitted by a dozen drillers trying to get my thumb to stop doing it with no luck. I'm very tempted to start two handing just for the simple of fact of not dealing with a thumb hole.

Instead of using the white tape, try using black in the back off the hole to adjust the size.

You could also go to using a IT or Switchgrip and have a couple of different thumbs you can switch between.

Theres also the fitting tapes to use on your thumb instead of in the hole.

I use black tape also rather than white, much smoother release for me. Second suggestion, the best tape I have used is Vise. Just feels better to me than anything else I have tried and I rarely have any issues when changing, adding or subtracting tape. Easy in, easy out, very consistent feeling.

Is that Ron Clifton's Magic Carpet? I have some, but I have not yet tried it.

If you were fitted with the MoRich wiki, you're going to have problems.  Most of it is ok, but the pitch/angle philosophy horrifies me.  It would work if we bowled in zero gravity, but with the forces exerted on your arm and hand during release, those pitch combinations don't work.  If your thumb swells and shrinks that much, you have several problems with your fit which I'm fairly certain causes you to grip.  I never used to swell that much, but I'd have tape come out at the beginning of the set, and then go back in a game later.  Now I don't adjust at all because I got my fit dialed in.  You've got some stress or force that's causing pressure, excess friction, or suction, so either you're gripping too tight, have a bad fit, or both, and I'm guessing both.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

Yes it is. The late Sawbones turned me on to it because I had an ever changing thumb. I've tried to get away from it, but it's the only tape that can provide me with a very snug thumb fit.

Speaking of morich fit...I knew two guys who thought of mo like a God. The followed his techniques only to develop issues later on...

Someone here said..."do you throw a coke bottle down the lane?"

Thanks for the response and for the good words about the tape. I am looking forward to using it.

FWIW I agree that Vise tape is the best i've used. The feel of the white is way better and the black tape is much thinner than others i've tried, so easier to adjust for fill.

This, anytime I see that someone needs 8 pieces of tape in the thumb, I am instantly skeptical of the fit.

As for tape, I actually use the Brunswick 3/4 white tape, one piece in front and one piece in back. No, not literally the front and back, but angled to fit the shape of my oval thumbs. Black tape is too slick and its a bear getting it out.

The Powerhouse white tape isn't tacky like the others. Give it a try and I think you'll like it.

There was a thread earlier on sticky white tape, it is a manufacturing problem and the Powerhouse tape was found to be the only one that didn't have the problem (you can search for the thread).  Take the 8 pieces of tape out and put the MC in the back of the hole.  8 pieces is a lot of tape, so the hole will probably still be a little loose, add the Ebonite Powerhouse white tape one piece at a time until you get a good release.  Then you shouldn't have to add/subtract tape so often.  If the white tape is too sticky for you, add one piece of black tape on top of the white.  --  JohnP
