White track rings
« on: August 10, 2008, 12:20:53 PM »
When you bowl on very dry lanes, these white rings where your track is clearly are the surface of the ball being burned a bit by the friction between the lane and the ball.  Do these also signify that the lane surface is getting burned up a bit, or is it possible this could happen on a good lane surface that just hasn't been oiled well lately.  I have seen this happen at 2 centers in the SoCal area, Pickwick, and Foothill Lanes, and am beginning to see it in a house I bowl in a lot, primarily from the house putting so little oil outside of 10 board.  Just wondering if this means the lane surface is beginning to go, or just from a lack of oil at this point in time.  Thanks.

Pickwick has piece of crap lanes and they do not oil them well. I used to bowl there all the time til I moved out to Ventura county.

Here's something I've found interesting: I've only gotten those things on Brunswick lanes, specifically AnviLane, when they're very dry.

Even on very dry AMF HPLs, I've never seen those rings.

May mean nothing, may mean everything, I don't know. Just a personal observation.

Hmmm.

Maybe they are oiling with lithium grease?

Or maybe the price of oil is so high they are using baby powder?

Or possibly the lanes have dandruff.  Suggest to the owner that he should strip the lanes using Head and Shoulders next time.

Be sure to let me know how that conversation goes...

This can also happen if the machine leaves a film of stripper / cleaner on the backends of the lanes...we had that happen to us last year for a while.

I bowl in a house that is notorious for this. Makes a nice new ball look like crap in a matter of frames.....

This might have nothing to do with what the post was about but anywho, from time to time I go cosmic bowling and after bowling a few games I can see the oil rings under the black light.
