We go 36 weeks.  About 5 too many, imo.

We did 36 weeks last season in both my Tuessday and Wednesday league.  Follow that with a 12-week summer league, and that's 48 weeks out of the year.  That only left 4 weeks for all holidays, league meetings, awards, and breaks.  If awards and league meetings are on the same night, there's still only 2 weeks left for holidays.  Sometimes you can avoid taking time off, the Tuesday league might not take a week off for Thanksgiving, or if Christmas and New Years are on weekends, the Wednesday night league might only take off the week in the middle.

But that leaves no time for breaks.  This year, we voted on a 32-week season to give us an extra break.  It hasn't really dragged on too badly, though it does make our last place standing on Tuesday seem to last forever.

I did 30 weeks the first year I bowled here, and that seemed too short.  Maybe because I didn't bowl the summer and it seemed like a really long break.

Are you sure about that?? Try it for 33 weeks 5 nights aweek. I did 3 years ago and vowed to never do that again, i did it this year but lost my job which forced me to drop from 5 nights to 3 nights. After this season is done I too will be done for a while. For how long?? i dunno. Will i return, probably but i dont know when.

I believe the length of leagues is one of the reasons for bowlings decline as there are so many other entertainment avenues..

Shorter leagues WOULD be a boon to bowling!

Would you be willing to pay more each week if the season was shorter?

Almost everyone but the proprietors want a shorter season. Cost to run the center remain pretty constant. But if you have to organize a lot of extra leagues their cost would probably go up.

Everyone wants a short season that starts at the first of Octobe and ends in March. But the reality would be a short season starting in August going thru December then another Starting in January going thru May.

Bowlers bowling long seasons now would probably pick one or the other but not both giving reduced lineage to the house.

I will agree, Bartender. Last year in one of our leagues, we had 3 couples, that way you bowled 2 out of 3 weeks, I hated it, this year we created a new team. I have missed a couple weeks ( sick grandkids ) but I will be there every night we bowl, as long as the kids are well, and it could go 42-46 weeks as far as I am concerned.

I kinda like Sawbone's view on this... We bowl 35 weeks and personally I'd like to chop off the first 4 weeks and the last 4 weeks.  Start the First of October and be done the First of April.  September is still too nice, generally, and you're trying to get as much outdoor activity in as you can before the weather gets nasty.  Likewise, come April you've been cooped up indoors so much you're ready to get outdoors again.  I kinda like the short summer league May through August, but I wouldn't bowl in that if it weren't the only league I can find that puts out sport/tournament conditions.  Places don't seem to put them out for the fall leagues.

I don't think bowling season should EVER end.  I'm a masochist and I crave the punishment.

Actually, I've had about enough.  Especially after the last couple of 530 series.  Besides, horseshoe pitching season is about to start...something I'm worse at than bowling.  I'm the best bowler in my horseshoe pitching league...I think.  I'm the ONLY horseshoe pitcher in any of my bowling leagues, so I'd be the one to beat in the bowling/horseshoe pitching biathlon.   By the time horseshoe pitching season is over, bowling is looking really good.

I also wish the leagues were shorter. We even have some fun leagues around here (Vegas leagues, for instance) and I really wish those were 12-16 weeks long, but instead they're 24-25 weeks with no layout except for holidays! I'd even be willing to pay more each week to make up the difference in prize fund, although I generally don't bowl for the money.

My leagues are 32 weeks and then I start the summer sport/PBA league 3 weeks later which is 16 weeks then a week off and start fall again. Wish it was 2 weeks off between each season, 3 weeks is a bit much and 1 isn't quite enough.
I have missed 2 nights in 3 years bowling both fall and summer, both absences were completely unavoidable.

Last year, our league voted to go 32 weeks. When the proprietor was told, his reply was " Then take your league and go somewhere else. If you can't guarantee me 36 weeks, I don't want you here."

He claims he makes more on open bowling anyway.  I said to tell him to go to he!!, but too many others wouldn't and didn't want to drive 35 miles to the next center. ( yes, I live in rural east Texas and it is that far )

Around here, it is 36 weeks or nothing.
