Who here has been on a cruise?
« on: July 10, 2006, 02:53:05 AM »
I am planning a cruise for october as a honeymoon. The one I am looking into is a 7 night western carribean on the Carnival Miracle. It leaves from Miami or Tampa Florida can't remember which. It has 4 ports which include Cozumel,Belize,Costa Maya, and Grand Cayman Islands.

Has anyone ever been to these places that can tell me if they are good choices? This is my first time going anywhere like this and first time for a cruise. I want it to be a rememberable experience outside of the bedroom!

Feel free to suggest some other places to visit on the cruise as long as they are eastern or western carribean. Thanks for any help, comments or suggestions.

Tim

My wife really wants to do something like that.  Her brother even bought some sort of tickets for one (though they keep pushing their dates back) and we talked about going but with the midget now, it'll be tough to arrange.

My grandmother and aunt went on an Alaskan cruise and we frequently hear about how my g'ma didn't really enjoy it. (It's one of her "buttons", just like the "dang designated hitter" button and the "Melo's g-d SUV" button)  There was too much of Alaska that's beautiful and interesting to spend most of the time on a ship.  And a lot of the activities cost extra.  I don't know if that's the norm or if it would apply to the cruise you're taking, but it's something to consider and check on.

i went on a cruise about a month ago. it left from puerto rico, to St. Thomas, to Dominica, to Barbados, and finally Aruba. It was magical. i had such a good time. my fathers buisness partner won $94,000 gambling on the boat so everyone in our party each recieved $2,000. anyways it was such a fun trip with lots to do. i highly recommend it. expecially dominica, it was still somewhat "Uncivilized". but anyways it was a BLAST!

Legend4life95,

Congrats, you are going to have a great time.  I've been on 2 crusies lately, one Western itenerary on Carnival, and one Eastern on RCI.

First, I would highly reccomend you check out www.crusiecritic.com.  You can do hours of research there on various cruise lines and destinations.  Great chat boards too.

On my Western trip, I had the same stops as yours other than we went to Isla Roatan instead of Costa Maya.  Cozumel, lots of fun things to do right where you doc.  There is no tendering required here, you can just walk off the ship.  Belize, pick a good excursion here.  Very beautiful country, but also a third world counrty.  Lots of poverty here.  In Grand Cayman, you absoultely have to do one thing if nothing else on your entire trip.  Sign up for an excursion to go swim with the stingrays.  Out of both crusies, that was the most fun we had by far.

One last thing, is your sail date.  October is hit or miss.  The weather should be perfect.  The drawback, is that you are right in the middle of hurricane season.  On our first cruise we had originally had an Eastern cruise.  On the day of, they moved it to the Western to avoid a hurricane.

Went on an NCL Cruise...
Everything offshore was a blast. Our boat was small in terms of cruise ships, not much to do (for a 15 year old)during days at sea.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

applegam,

I did see in the brochure about swimming witht he stingrays. Sounds fun and I will probaly do that. I am really looking forward to touring the ruins in costa maya though. I like stuff like that. You're right about october being in the middle of hurricane season though. The lady told me I would have a better chance of having perfect weather if I went on the western carribean b/c alot of the hurricanes would be more toward Bermuda. I hope it all works out ok. They are giving me somewhat of a great package deal directly through Carnival. I am in NC and for roundtrip airfare, cruise, port taxes, government taxs and everything included into one price, it will be about $1500.00 for me and my bride to be. I think thats good compared to what AAA Travel quoted me. For the same package AAA told me just under $2500.00.

$1500 is a real good deal.  Plan on setting aside at least $300-$400 for on board charges.  Of course all the food is free, but the driks can add up.  Even pop isn't free.  But, if you not a big drinker it shouldnt be too much.  Excursions can be a bit pricy.  It really depends.  They range anywhere from $25.00 per person to $150.00 and up per person.  That stingray trip I talked about erlier acutally is pretty cheap.  I doubt you will spend more than $70.00 for the 2 of you.  Obviously, you only have so many hours to spend in each port.  I always liked to pick the excursions that were only 2-3 hours.  That way you have time to just do your own thing as well in port.  Also, they make it way too easy to buy things on the ship.  Both of you will get a "sign and sail" card.  You can use it to purchase anything at all on the ship.  Then at the end of the cruise you get the bill.

I've been to all the places except for belize. All the islands are beutiful and all have the own unique nitch. with cayman its the rum cakes, turtle farm, and hell. cozumel its all the shops downtown.. and costa maya is just a unique little port. imo, even tho i am only 16 a cruise is a great vacation, or in your position a honeymoon.  you have people wait on you, fantastic food, and great places that have amazing features. if i were you i would deffinetly choose a cruise, its a fun experience.
