Why Are You Still Bowling
« on: December 28, 2009, 06:40:49 AM »
I know I haven't been bowling as allot of people on this forum but I think I have reached the end.  It was great but getting tired of the sport because its becoming more of a job than fun.  I have achieved all that I think I really can and thats not saying to much but it was fun just getting tired of the pressure to always having great games and then looked at crazy or being called a sand bagger..

Why do most of you still bowl?

Been there, done that.

Always pushing myself, always striving to achieve more, learn more, and be the best can be punishing.

I finally had to stop and remind myself why I started bowling in the first place. It was to get out of the house and enjoy some time with my wife and friends, doing something we all ENJOYED. The recreational side was gone for me, and it had become more like a second job than an enjoyable activity.

Yes, I still want to be good, but there has to be a balance to it as well that lets me participate without obsessing.

I no longer practice 40-50 games a week. I no longer have to IMMEDIATELY have the next great piece of equipment. And I no longer feel the need to have the highest game/series/average in the house.

I now bowl two leagues a week, that's it. I have "new" equipment, but got it at closeout prices because 90% of it is last years model. And I now feel blessed just to be able to participate and spend a relaxing evening with friends and family, doing something we enjoy.

Remember why you got started in the first place and how much fun you had at first. You're probably not ever going to make a living doing it, so let it be a fun, recreational activity that you also happen to be pretty good at. And remember, a bad night of bowling ISN'T going to change your life and won't even matter next week. Focus on what is important in life, get your priorities straight (like I had to ), and enjoy yourself.  After all, bowling is supposed to be FUN, isn't it?

Uhh..obsessed are we?

If you can't have fun doing something you love, you might have more issues than just being tired of bowling.

SURE WAS!  And, I had it BAD.  So bad that if it looked like I might have to work late and miss bowling, I got depressed. I even skipped work once because of it.

I got life straightened out for me though. I figured out why it wasn't fun anymore, and it just wasn't worth it if it wasn't fun. So, I went back to basics and what made it fun in the first place.

Now, I look forward to league nights, still average around 210-220, and leave it all there when I go home. It's fun, but it ain't life. It's just a small part OF my life.

I try not to bowl too much to avoid getting to that point. And I don't get in pots because I don't want to deal with the pressure of having to bowl good. I also wouldn't win that much anyway being around a 215-220 average but I just prefer not to have to deal with the need to win when I can just relax and not worry about it. Plus most people just end up breaking even or less than in pots unless they are one of the top bowlers in the area.

I use to bowl is scratch league and local tournaments when it meant something more to me..

Now, I just like because it's more fun than anything competitive.

Two vegas league and one experience league during the summer.

Why? because its..Vegas..that's why..

I like the idea of maybe making some extra cash on the side.

I also enjoy going out league night with the guys having some drinks and laughs.

Did you say 215 - 220 will win you a pot ...

Not in my area -- You need 250s or better to win side pots ...

Don't want to change the subject but re: Pots: I have been getting into them .. what I don't like is best bowler (in all leagues) get into all pots/brackets and you have to beat the guy with the best average .. another thing I've learned to dislike is .. having to beat someone on your own team ..sorry for the distraction .. STILL BOWLING cause I LOVE IT!
