Why so many balls for oil and so few for dry?
« on: August 30, 2003, 08:03:21 PM »
I am constantly amazed at the balls the manufacturers put out. It seems as if each new ball hooks more than the last. I don't know about your area, but in philly I rarely see a condition that would require a stronger ball than a mid priced reactive. I have an Adrenaline for floods that I never use because it hooks too much. I have a Vortex 1 for wetter mediums, an old green Messenger for drier mediums and a Storm Football for dry and spares. I would love to buy a reactive ball with a very weak cover and a core with some flare potential because I track over the holes and like the track to flare away from them. Nobody makes this!!!
I'm waiting for the new pearl urethane Gargoyle and I hope this ball does the trick. I know big hook is sexy and helps sell balls but when I see league I think most bowlers could really benefit from a strong core weak cover ball. I wish there were more choices in this category.

If I am not mistaken there tons of ball that fits that weak reactive cover and core that will flare alittle. Storm's old Orange Flame Reactive...tiheir current HIT and Big Hit series. C-300s Scout Reactives, Brunswick's Grooves, Ebonites Tornados and on and on.

Try one of these with a very mild drilling and see what you get.

These balls all have strong covers with weaker high rg glorified 3- piece cores. I want a high tech core with a weaker reactive cover. The manufacturers are doing it backwards. The scout class balls do too much on dry and nothing on oil. What good is a ball like that?

louie,

There is a company with a strong core and weak cover, Lane1 makes the Buzzsaw XXXL, and will be releasing the XXL. If you are facing dry lanes and still releasing the ball without your thumb in it then the XXXL would be a great addition. Ringing10s is selling a used 15lb one right now in the wanted for sale forum.

The XXXL does not jump violently off of dry boards. It is controllable and hit is awesome.

Thanx for the advice.
I throw 14 right now so the used one isn't an option.
I've thought about lane 1 stuff for a while. Doesn't the xxxl flare very little?
I just want to avoid that thump going down the lanes.

It flares 2.5-3inches for me. But flare on a plastic ball is not going to mean as much as flare on a reactive.

goodluck with your decision.

bones,

The XXXL is smooth off of the dry, no overreaction or early hook. As with any ball, if you are on a complete desert it will hook, but it will remain playable when everything else you have will not. The strong core in my opinion does nothing for the hook of the ball, it hooks about the same as any other plastic ball, maybe a hair more. The core makes this ball hit with the power and authority of a reactive.

I am not one of those Lane1 fans that throw nothing but Lane1. I liked what I saw and what I heard of this ball and decided to pick one up. It is drilled 4x4, so in now way is it a weak drill. This is the ball that I dreamed for a long time. When the oil is gone and everything else in the bag is hooking too much, this ball allows me to square up at 8-10 board. I can do this with almost any other plastic ball----however if my speed is up I am going to leave 8-10s out of the rear (or maybe even 5-10s).

I have alot of ball speed but I am currently working no not sliding and it has cut my speed down from 20-21mph down to about 17-18. So if someone has slower speed this ball will still be playable with a couple of board swing.

I suggest it to anyone that needs a plastic ball with punch. It rolls cleanly and does not jump violently----which is what just about anyone who is bowling on conditions where everything else is nose diving.

Throwing them side by side.....my golf ball and the XXXL (for comparison), the XXXL made me have to move my feet 3 boards. Polyester hits hard because of how hard the surface is, but the difference between these two was shown in the roll, HIT, and pin action. The XXXL dominated.

The good results with this ball are really making me want to try a Black Cherry Bomb.

How about the Stinger 2 piece Low Flare and the Vortex 2 Dry?? Is the Vortex 2 Dry more or less hook than the 3 piece balls like the Flame, Tornado's, and Groove series??

I've seen the low flare in action. It hooks quite a bit in dry and skids in oil. The V2 dry is the lowest flareing ball ever made. For me it would thump all the way down the lane. Yuck!

Now I find this post fascinating!

Since you've changed your style the lanes are too dry.

Before they were too wet!

In my area my home house I've gone from throwing Reaction Revs and AMF Evolution Extras to throwing the Blue Violet Tornado and the Walter Ray Williams at most.

Took those up to a house where I'm going to be bowling in league this winter and even the Reaction Rev drilled label wasn't enough.  Going to have to use a stronger drilled EZ Money, or Vicious Particle or Super Strong drilled Dynothane Cure!  which has been tearing up this wet synthetic house.

Ain't it the truth!!
I used to handle dry better than most due to having more speed than revs. Now that I can hook plastic, dry lanes are a real concern! It shows how your style reflects your perception of the lane conditions. I have plastic for toast, but I'm searching for that ball just above plastic when the lanes are drying out but still have some oil. I'm thinking Dynothane Barrage or the new Urethane Gargoyle.

The only problem with Urethane is that it does have a tendancy to grab early. The safest way to go would be plastic with a strong core. You may want to see if you are able to find an Ebonite Clear Wolf cheap on ebay---or even from users on ball reviews. If the price tag on the XXXL is too high for you then go that route. You will be guaranteed to be satisfied, but if you go another route there is not guarantee that you will like it.

Just a thought....what about the red pearl hammer(urethane) or possibly a black messenger (urethane) with a lightbulb core and flip block.  I am not really a fan of either of these companies but they are about the only ones that make them.
